Design for japanese maple and conifer garden
Comments (6)And your goals are ....?? If the garden is to be an artistic statement (interesting and pleasurable to look at and be in,) then I think you are way too wrapped up in the plants at this stage of the game. It would be better to work out the forms, arrangements, layout and then consult your list of plants to see what would be useful to you in making your dream come true. Trying to squeeze in all the favorites first creates the likelihood that the end result will be jumbled, crowded and possibly disorganized. Because of the blackness of the shadow areas, the limits of the garden can't quite be seen, but the arbor does not seem to be at the back. I would consider, first, how this would be placed since it's a major element and you are not using it as an entrance, but more like an altar ... which is OK, but maybe it would be better toward the back and less in the center of the garden. Wish you had a better picture that showed into the shadows. I hope you paint the arbor and make it look more refined. (I don't get the mass appeal of weathering barn wood in gardens!)...See MoreJAWS Nursery-Conifers, Maples and Goodies

Comments (16)I love Japanese maples. I have 10 of them around my small California yard. They do however grow up...and their roots are every bit as impossible as those maples I grew back in Chicago. Here's a photo of a 20 year old Crimson Queen. Nothing grows under it except baby tears. It needs to be pruned to see some structure and that will happen in the next few weeks. Its trunk is probably 8" in diameter...My hands don't touch when I put them around the trunk. I cannot imagine hostas and jap maples growing together, except when they are very young, which is most of the photos I've seen. I just went out to take a photo of the roots of a larger green one, but the contrast is too great. Will try to take a photo tomorrow morning. It has surface roots everywhere. Hostas really do improve with age, as do Japanese maples, but I don't think they can do it together for the long term. Pots would work, though. My opinion. -Babka...See MoreFall in a Northwest Japanese maple and Conifer garden
Comments (18)Wow, that is a lot of work! I take it your goal is to have your garden look attractive at every stage of its growth? Taking the easy way out and using annuals to fill in where the plants haven't grown enough yet would obviously run counter to your whole design theme. At what point do you decide you won't want to keep moving a plant because of its size, and you'll find it a permanent spot? Also, are you going to have a home for all of these trees once they're mature? Or are you planning to cull a bunch once things get crowded? Your whole style is fascinating, but I can't even wrap my head around how much time and money you must have put into your garden....See Morewhaas_5a
