Sounds like a kumquat to me. Maybe a Meiwa kumquat, which tends to be more round than other kumquats.

I thought it sounded like a Kumquat as well but the rounded fruit threw me off.

I believe you can eat the whole fruit,skin and all with a kumquat...and i am not aware of any other citrus where you can eat the skin straight off the fruit and actually enjoy the experience! They are often used for marmalades i think.

just looked at your pics and i must say the fruits look very similar to my clementine mandarin....I have some on my tree at the moment and will take some pics tomorrow for you to compare...Kumquats tend to be small compact trees.
Clementines tend to grow round small to medium sized fruits and mine certainly went orange early and turned quickly....They also go a lovely deep orange colour and the skin is thin and tight to the fruit...not easy peel at all but leave them on for a while and they are one of the sweetest mandarins in NZ and my favorite variety...have never tried to eat the skin mind!

Kumquat is a thought that I had -- I had a kumquat tree in the front yard many years ago when I lived out west--but these are much larger and shaped differently than any kumquat I ever saw. And I don't remember if they were as tart - these really are like biting into a lemon.

That description of the Meiwa does seem to match pretty closely--even a few of the pics, although most seem to still have that oval shape.

I ate the peel rather inadvertently! It was so firm to the flesh and so thin that I couldn't tear it away -- once I found that it was tasty I just went with eating it instead of destroying the fruit trying to get it off.

Oh, clementines are my favorite! I did get a sack of smaller than usual and more tart ones at Aldi this past winter -- hmmm.

I don't think these could have stayed on the tree much longer to get sweeter--they are really quite soft--but I really have no idea.

True,clementines are truly sweet and their orange is a deep orange colour too...they are my favorite citrus.
My mother mentioned a citrus to me once ,that were small and you could eat them whole.....I would make marmalade with them,if it was me...think of all those flavours = Yum

raee, it could also possibly be a Calamondin, which are much rounder. They are also very tart and acidic, and the skin is edible and sweeter. Don't know why my brain didn't connect. I have 5 Calamondin trees, but they are variegated and maybe that's why I didn't make the connection. Most likely a Calamondin. Your photos are a wee bit small for me to make out the tree and fruit clearly, but this is definitely what you've got :-)

Sorry about the pictures, I thought the thumbnails could be clicked for a larger image but I see they can't. I'll have to look for another place to post pictures next time.

I had never heard of Calamondins -- do you eat yours? the link seems to imply that they are not used as an edible, but I enjoyed these (I like very tart, I will eat the lemon after squeezing it into my tea).

I do think they would make a nice marmalade, if I had enough.

I wonder if they come true from seed?
