Dying Agave

Recently, I found that my mother had an Agave plant that she was completely neglecting. Since I noticed it was dying, I hoped to save it, so she repotted it and brought it to my apartment--I put it on a shaded part of my balcony. Unfortunately, nothing I've done seems to help it--though, truthfully, I haven't done a LOT. I don't have much of a green thumb, but I've been trying to learn more about succulents and cacti after enjoying them so much when I was in Arizona.

Basically, the leaves of this plant are turning a terrible brown...it's creeping further and further up to the center of the plant, and the new leaf fold is browning at the tip. I have no idea what to do for this plant except, perhaps, get a different pot and try it again? I don't have the option of planting it in the ground since I live in an apartment, and I'd never convince my mother to take it and plant because she, frankly, hated it from the get-go (it was given to her).

Any suggestions on what I might do?
