Morning Glory Tadpoles II: Dead in the Water

Well, I took some of the seeds with the "tail" on them and tried to get them to germinate but they were not viable, so I guess that the tadpoles had already germinated in the husk. What could have prevented this, did I leave the seed pod on the vine too long? I admit that I was just waiting for the vine to start shutting down for the season and then harvest the pods, but I guess I should have been harvesting all along. Is this something that only happens with certain plants? My other vines, Cypress and Moonvine, were fine, even though I waited to harvest them also.

I had the same problem on some plants. I think (guessing here) it was the high humidity just before I harvested them. I'm not sure what can be done. Some seeds are better ripened on the plant and others can be harvested a little earlier and will ripen off the plant. This seems to be the case anyway, I don't really know very much about seeds. Also, I see I haven't answered the question at all and I don't know what can be done to prevent it. -Ais.

The only solution I can think of is to harvest the seeds all along. What I do with the butterfly weed seeds is to harvest the pods as soon as they show any signs of splitting open.

Frankly anything i plant anywhere near MG's ends up strangled and then the MG's just trail along through the plants all around and through the gardens. So i was constantly pulling them out of Gerber's Hostas and the like. The only place i will have MG's anymore is right on the chain link fences. They don't bother trailing through the grass, because their trailing vines are all well above the grass line. The only problem with them on the fences, is they look like crap in winter or i have to clean up the fencing, one or da tuther.

dish soap is not a soap.. like they talk of.. in the garden ... some are not good with plants ... and i really dont know what vinegar will do for them ... but it will alter the pH of your media ... if used in abundance .... vinegar is used as a cleaner.. becasue of its high acid content ... relatively speaking .... you are winging this??? .. completely ???? .. arent you ???? .. lol ... you remind me of my son or daughter ... of course.. i am talking with you ... they would never ask me ... lol ... may i ask your age??? .... it would help me to understand what i am working with ... lol ... ballpark it.. i dont want any private info and of course.. you isolated the transplant ... if you put it right next to the infested pots ... momma is going to fly over there and start the cycle in that pot ... did you sterilize that media ... i didnt know there werer traps for such ... and they obviously wont trap the eggs waiting to hatch ... are you talking about the yellow sticky traps???? i once had a FG problem.. so big ... i couldnt watch my beloved red wings play hockey.. for the 90 million pucks that seemed to appear on the tv screen ... i had to bomb the house ... and repot a couple hundred potted hosta seedlings ... ken

So, from an earlier post I understand that over-fertilizing morning glories will cause an abundance of leaves and little to no blooming. This spring I added my own compost and worm castings to supplement some particularly poor soil and planted Heavenly Blues mixed w/saved seeds from other variaties I've previously grown in pots. Only the previously cultivated varieties have bloomed, and sparsely at that. The HBs have yet to bloom. Is there anything I can do to encourage blooming?

Hi, I am looking for some suggestions as to what is eating my Morning Glories leaves... 2 weeks ago, I noticed lots of holes in my morning glories leaves. I looked under the leaf and found a shiny metallic beetle, which I later found out was a Golden tortoise beetle. I pulled it off and let it fly away. I though I had solved the problem until today I noticed more holes in the leaves. I looked at the leaves and there are tiny white fly like insects all over them. Does anyone know what these are and how to get rid of them? The morning glories are also planted in pots with nasturtiums - I don't know if this would have anything to do with these insects or not... Any ideas would be appreciated... Thanks!

After I realized what was happening, I went out and cut down all of the vines and put them in the block building to dry out. I hope that there will be some viable seed anyway.

I had another thought -- it is still warm enough for morning glory seeds to germinate? They like it hot.

Good question Alicia... I have a moonvine (related Ipomea) and it's got big pods that I want to harvest for next year. But they are developing slowly and I am not sure they'll be ready in time. I loved Dottie's idea about the stockings over the seedpod (in another thread) to catch them when they pop open. Only problem is I never wore stockings. -Ais.

Hey Ais...buy some cheap knee hi stockings at the grocery store. For some strange reason I had a couple of pairs. Used one for a niger seed sock when the squirrels ran off with my old one. Adele
