Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana? Need help IDing

I posted these pictures once already under the heading "Plant ID" and vvdo suggested that it's a kalanchoe blossfeldiana.

Here's the rest of the original post:

I "rescued" a couple of plants from the Day Care where I worked. They were overgrown and falling over, so I seperated them. Now I have 4 pots of them and they sure are all different. Some of them grow straight and have new shoots come from the same stem. Others look like they were top heavy, because there stem sloped down, and now the plants growing up again.

Some of the leaves are turning reddish/orange and the tips are dying. Any ideas what these are, how they are supposed to grow, and how I can treat them best?

Mccaba, though the pots are cute, the Kals should be planted in clay..the soil is really wet..Kal soil needs to dry out completly before re=watering.
The soil looks too heavy, also..what type of soil did you use? You need a well-draining soil for yur Kals since they're succulent.
Do the pots have drainage? Toni

Toni, thanks for replying. So the plants are kalanchoe blossfeldiana? Right now they are in regular potting soil in plastic pots (no drainage holes). I do have some clay pots in the basement and just bought some cactus soil today. Is that what I should plant them in? Also, should I cut off the empty stalk and try to root the top part with the leaves? Or are they supposed to look like that (stalk empty at the bottom, and growing up and down and all over the place)?

It is commonly known as the Florist Kalanchoe, it is sold at box stores, and may not be in flower at this time. My nursery grows these as well. Bob you are right it is K. blossfeldiana Poelln. They come in many colors, I have an orange one in flower at this time sitting out in Western exposure. The reason it can't be recognized is because it is in new growth, the leaves are usally darker green when grown in shade, this plant is recognizable the world over. The leaves usually cup up. I also have a fushia red in flower. No yellows, I may have lost those in our recent freeze.They are even producing double or triple flowered varieties which look like tiny miniature Roses. Dufflebag

Crenda, That is one of my fears in addition to burning the leaves, etoliation. I really don't want to burn it as I've already attached some sentimental value to it (Hubby bought me one with the same color flowers when we started dating... I killed it by leaving it inside in a very poorly lit room. I know more about succulents now haha). I guess it's a toss up between burning it or having it become leggy. I guess I could try giving it a bit more light by gradually introducing it and see what happens. I know I'll probably have to move it once it hits July, our patio turns into Hades and everything scorches >.Thanks for the photo, I love your kalanchoe. I think the more pale leaves is possibly normal, it seems to be happy either way with all those blooms! Planto

Sorry so late in responding ehuns. Once a year, preferably spring, chop the trunk back hard and let it grow out again till the start of next spring, then do it again. This will create taper in the trunk, and encourages growth down low. To create movement in the trunk, cut back to a side shoot that's growing in the direction that you like. When I say cut back hard, I mean real hard, as in the second or third node from soil level. Don't worry if there aren't any leaves present afterwards, for they'll be an explosion of growth at and below the cut point. Give it full sun and plenty of water. Fertilize every other week and don't touch it again until next spring. Good luck.

Good about re-potting! If not enough light, some CFL bulbs or fluorescents will help (I have many succulents in the basement due to lack of space - there are only small windows there, so supplemental lights are used. Once plants grow so stretched, they won't revert to compact growth, only new growth will be more compact. So anything that can be done during winter helps some. Putting the into sunniest/brightest spot you have is a step in right direction :) You could also search this site for info on gritty mix (also known as 1.1.1). That kind of potting mix is best for succulents - allows great drainage and aeration. Good luck with growing.
