Problem leaves on orange tree ( picture inside )

Hi,

I planted this one from a seed a little over a year ago, the leaves just look terrible. Any orange tree expert that can give me a few hints on where my care fails? I have it standing in a pot in a south exposed window indoors. New leaves look alright, but after a while will turn into looking like the once on the picture.

Bad case of spider mite damage.
Take the plant outside and spray forcefully with water to knock of most of the mites. After this, horticultural oil gives reasonable control. Or, on a small plant, constant washing and spraying may work, otherwise spray with whatever insecticide is recommended in Sweden. If you can get hold of the Bayer product 'Spint', this does work.

It could be any of several mineral deficiencies -- Manganese, Zinc or Iron all tend to have dark green ribs with the remainder of the leaf a lighter color. The attached URL gives an explanation of these and other mineral deficiencies.

Hi, I have a washington orange tree(dwarf)about 4 feet tall in my backyard and i noticed that half of the branches were dying. It was healthy for a year and all of the sudden this things happened started 2 months ago. Most of the leaves turns yellow and small branches turns to brown. New fruits about 10 mm in size were falling. I watered my tree almost every other day. Applied citrus fertilizer and still not working. How could i keep my tree healthy? Thank you so much.

Ferreal, if the stems are green, then the tree is alive. I think repotting put it in shock. What size pot was it in, and what size did you repot in? What type of soil did you use the second time? I think it needs time to adjust. Make sure you don't overwater..or underwater for that matter. Check the soil w/your finger. STick your finger inside the soil, as deep as it'll go..Only when soil feels crumbly should you water. Is your house dry? If so, invest in a humidifer. I'd also mist the stems/leaves daily, too. It can't hurt. I think w/some patience and a little work, your tree should do fine..Toni

tsmith2579, There is no draft our pellet stove blower is blowing in a different direction. The plastic pot has the drip pan attached on the bottom so if there is a little excess water that's where it goes and it probably does sit there until it evaporates. I do have it in the sunniest part of the house with 2 plant lights on them. Are the halogen shop lamp better than the plant lights? Are plastic pots ok to plant orange trees in? Right now I have them planted in potting soil and a little peat moss,and I am in the process of transplanting them into more drainable soil because I don't know what else to try because of leaves and baby fruit falling off. Any other suggestions?

you might want to try the fruit forum... those experts are never in this forum ... you might also want to have a soil test done.. to see what your soil is lacking.. in regard to citrus crop.. call your county extension office ... ken

Mites. Amazing amounts of mites.

Deficiencies of Manganese, Zinc or Iron show far different coloration patterns.

Thanks for your answers, yes mites was my conclusion too, but thanks for the citrus disease page!

Im pretty sure today made me a mass mites murderer, used 4 different things to make them go byÃ©bye.

Yikes, I hope they are all compatible with each other. It would be a shame to lose the leaves to phytotoxicity!
