Trees Along My Walk

Two or three times a week my wife and I walk a couple of miles along a path on an old logging railroad grade. The trees we run into are:

Ponderosa pine

Sugar pine

Gray pine

Knobcone pine

Incense cedar

Douglas fir

California black oak

Valley oak

Blue oak

Canyon live oak

Interior live oak

Bigleaf maple

California buckeye

Fremont cottonwood

Fremont X black cottonwood hybrids

California walnut

If you're running into these maybe you need to see an eye doctor. In woods near here we wouldn't run into nearly as many native species, only a handful of species in each category (conifers and broad-leaves).

Yesterday I was looking at a sort of revegetation menu at Half Price Books, were it was tagged at nearly 100 dollars - I didn't jump on it. In addition to the comparatively high numbers of tree species listed for areas down your way the Mesophytic Forest of Appalachia was loaded with taxa. The Siskiyou-Klamath region and the southern Appalachians are the analogs to Chinese forests in North America, refuges where numbers of species are concentrated.

I walk around my neighborhood and the local quiet country roads and there are a ton of beautiful conifers planted all over. Many are indigenous(douglas fir, noble fir, hemlock?), but there are also a lot of human planted beauties including serbian spruce, korean firs, atlantic cedars and ginko trees. I feel very lucky to be able to gaze at such beautiful trees on a regular basis. Mature serbian spruce in particular are just stunning. 10' wide and 30' tall with branches all the way down, curving up.

What a fantastic tour and great photos! There's alot of fantastic architecture and I suppose it's not a real tourist place, being in central Mexico and nowhere near a beach. It looks like a fantastic place to visit. Re: the six pointed star. The Magen David isn't strictly a Jewish graphic. I know I've read that it's also that it's used in conjunction with the occult, astrology or witchcraft and there was a six pointed star on one of the Texas/Mexican flags if I remember correctly. In the context of adorning a structure the Jewish connection would make more sense. You have such fantastics adventures Ellen.

The very first rose is probably mislabeled - I will sort its identity out with Fred Boutin this weekend. Think we got odorata rootstock instead of the rose we were trying to propagate. The second one (large with pink flowers) is Lijiang Rd Climber. The little one after Belle Vichysoisse is Mme Jules Gravereaux. I've also got a baby Belle Portugaise after that. Then, you've got all the names right, Kippy, although the spelling is Dr. Rouges. The wichurana was named by Jeri as Spring Street Peppermint. A great name but not a fabulous rose, unfortunately. Way too vigorous and blooms once with some mildew. It sometimes has two-toned flowers which is what led to the name. So sorry you will miss it this year, Kippy. I plan for the garden to continue and improve for years with me as its curator, but you know, one should never take a garden or gardener for granted. The garden is in a city cemetery and I'm just a volunteer. The time to see a garden is now. I've waited to visit several gardens, thinking I would go another year, only to discover that they are gone. God willing, I will last a good long time, and this garden will outlast me. Regarding that walk from the bottom of steps to pool ... what happened? It looks like it crashed and died at the bottom landing. The width should continue ... especially because it's not a very long walk. In front of blank wall I'd do a large flowering shrub. For zone 5 you might consider a Viburnum 'Carlesii' or Judd Viburnum (delicious scent when blooming.)

Thank you for your thoughts. The large tree to the right of the walk, right up against the house is some sort of contorted pine. White pine maybe? It is right in front of a window, and could probably stand to be pruned, but I don't think my husband would go for removing it even though it does block the window. For some reason he really likes it. I like it, too, but I think the house could look so much better with it having a hard prune or removed altogether. On the right of that, there are three yews under the other window. They look terrible this year - I was just out pruning and they have lots of brown patches. Yews have never done much for me, so I probably will look at removing those, too, and I agree we need a master plan for doing this over the course of a couple of years vs trying to plan each section individually. Yes, the front entry is cave like! We are also looking to make some improvements there and are exploring the idea of lightening the paint in that area, along with trim and garage doors so the whole thing looks less dingy. I like the idea of lowering the shrubbery and adding brighter vegetation in an effort to make it less cavey. The mulch was something added last year, by the previous owner's mulch man. We have not been happy with the performance or looks. We were thinking to remove it and use a cedar mulch, but I do like the idea of a ground cover instead, so we will explore that, too. I like the idea of just a few taller plants around the light post, but am not opposed to getting rid of that post and eliminating that bed altogether. There is enough lighting on the house at night when we need it, that we don't need the lamp for nighttime lighting. This is the area to the left of the garage. The weigela need to go, and the flowering tree needs some pruning at the top to remove dead branches. Black-eyed Susans fill in at th base of the flowering tree. The yew to the left of the garage door can be removed. I probably should have mentioned this left side of the garage in my original post but didn't want to seem greedy for your time!! Our lot runs to the pine trees. The blacktop driveway you see is for the next house over - it's kind of close, but we have lots of privacy in the back and on the other side. The two tall pine trees in the center of the pic are coming out in June. There was a 3rd one in the forefront until a huge windstorm recently knocked it over. Those trees are in terrible shape and can't be saved. We had a lawn guy here last night who said that the patchy grass up against our driveway is actually golf course grass. It looks bad and very different front the adjoining neighbor's grass so we are going to replace that. Lawn guy said the easiest way to go is "solar radiation." ;) The pine trees gave us quite a bit of privacy but we are losing that. We can't put up a fence, but I'd love to find something else that would give us at least a little privacy screen on that side. This is another view of the side of the garage from last August, I think. Love the hydrangea! At the back of the hydrangea is a small, no-so-private-anymore deck tucked in there. This is James Dean country. Some folk here would probably rather be in Hollywood, however, not I! I'm way too cool for that;-). Rebel without a cause...

Lots of Norfolk Island Pines. Some dying (they always look like they're dying to me) and hideous London Plane trees. Tall and skinny coast redwoods. A giant SEquoia or two. Many Canary Island Palms. Monterey Pine. Acacia trees (invasive). Coyote Bush. Eucalyptus trees in the trainyard. A few old coast live oaks. Winos. Cop cars. Yuppies "slumming it" after blowing eighty dollars on sushi.

Mostly planted trees around here, but some natives too. Species composition varies between public (parks, streets) planting and private (garden) planting.

Abundant: Sycamore Maple, European Ash, European Beech, European Holly, European Rowan, Common Whitebeam, Swedish Whitebeam, Wild Cherry, European Yew, Leyland Cypress, Lawson's Cypress, assorted hawthorns, crabapples and flowering cherries.

Frequent: Goat Willow, Weeping Willow, Hybrid Black Poplar, Silver Birch, Italian Alder, Sweet Chestnut, English Oak, Sessile Oak, Turkey Oak, Laburnum, Horse-chestnut, Norway Maple, Field Maple, Common Lime, Broad-leaved Lime, Sawara Cypress, Himalayan Cotoneaster.

Less common: Scots Pine, Austrian Pine, Stone Pine, Norway Spruce, Atlas Cedar, Deodar Cedar, Western Redcedar, Monkey-puzzle, White Poplar, Grey Poplar, Himalayan Birch, European Hornbeam, Turkish Hazel, Rauli Beech, Holm Oak, Northern Red Oak, Saucer Magnolia, London Plane, Silver Maple, Japanese Maple, Eucalyptus, etc.

Many others more rarely, just the odd individual here and there.

Moss forms a soft carpet in turf here - a mawn. Carpet of green with no mowing, watering or fertilization.

Sometime ago I tried to ID my woods according to the Wisconsin DNR classification of forest communities, but of course the natural environment is not quite that tidy or simple. NORTHERN DRY FOREST probably comes closest to describing it, but it also contains elements of NORTHERN DRY-MESIC and NORTHERN MESIC. We've got a ridge (Tower Ridge) running through the woods, and I've always found it interesting how plant life changes depending on which side of ridge you're on. The slightest difference in soil temps seems to make all the difference.

Hi. Or the exposure. A nursery-friend of ours was saying this about Pinus cembra and P. uncinata. First one grows only on the N. face of a particular mountain,the second one on the S. side. Apparently,the ridge is the dividing line,with no individuals of either sp. found on the 'wrong' side.T.
