New to the area...what spring-blooming bulbs naturalize?

I just moved to Durham from Houston (where bulbs are rare and hurricanes frequent) and am eager to plant some spring blooming bulbs. I'm a big fan of crocuses and jonquils and tulips (hyacinths are ok for smell). But I'm not wealthy enough (or blessed with lots of free time), so I wanted to plant bulbs that will come back year after year. Or, at least, for several years. I'm not that worried about deer eating the bulbs.

Any suggestions for great naturalizers? They will be contained in regular beds (versus in a field). Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!!!
