Dwarf yaupon holly help

We recently had a tree fall on a dwarf yaupon holly, killing it. The holly in question was in a line of about a dozen and they are all large (15 years old) for the species. I'd likw to find one as close as possible to the size of the remaining plants. The largest yaupon holly I've found at a nursery is 7 gallon - does anyone know of a source for larger (10 or 15 gallon) dwarf yaupon hollies?

As an alternative to finding a large Yaupon holly, could you move one of the existing hollies from one of the ends to the gap? You could put some other shrub, or a smaller Yaupon, at the end, where it might be less obviously smaller or different....

I wish you luck in finding what you are looking for, but as a possible way around, this might work.

Is it Ilex vomitoria 'Nana', 'Shillings' ('Stokes Dwarf') or 'Taylors Rudolph'?

You might try John Deere Landscaping on Hwy 64 between Apex and Jordan Lake. They will sell retail once in awhile, but they'll ask you which holly you have. They sell the largest specimen shrubs and trees that I know of in the area. I just looked up the availability list of several of the wholesale nurseries that I use and they didn't have anything larger than what you've already found.

I ended up using Liriope Big Blue and Nandina Flirt in front of the Yaupon Holly Bordeaux. I used a Dee Runk boxwood to the side of these to replace and old overgrown cypress. I am happy with these selections and they are growing fine so far. The nursery I get these from tend to carry unique plants that I can't find elsewhere. I was just looking at Taylor's Rudolph Yaupon Holly today since I need another for the other side of my foundation border. It has very nice foliage and has berries but the berries tend to sit down in the foliage. Yaupon Holly should work well in your zone.

I'd suggest that you remove a few inches of soil from the entire planting bed (rather than hole-by-hole) and build some nice raised beds for your landscaping. You should use a combination of good, dark top soil and some organics such as bark fines for the beds.

Youpons take very well to shearing and rejuvenation pruning. If you cut those at the base and start over, you will have an army of suckers to shape into whatever your heart desires. Personally, I think yours like fine as is. John Edit: Oh and I would cut them within an inch or two of the ground late next winter. As for cutting them at height, my experience with these is they will send out suckers from any and all exposed wood left. Is dwarf yaupon holly a native or a hybrid?

The dwarf Yaupon Holly is a selection of the native species, Ilex vomitoria and is usually identified by a cultivar name, such as 'Nana' (female), 'Stoke's Dwarf' or 'Shillings' (male). It is not recognized as a hybrid with any other species. Below is a link to the UARK description of the species and cultivars. When purchasing Dwarf Yaupon's, be sure the native species name is listed on the tags/markers and that it came from a reputable grower. A nearly identical dwarf Japanese Holly, Ilex crenata cultivar is sometimes labeled and sold as Yaupon Holly.
