Transplanting wild clematis

I have discovered a mass of wild Clematis pitcheri growing along a country road (dirt). Problem...the road grader has no respect for the native forbs here and some of these clematis are in the danger zone. So...when would be the best time to transplant? Some of them are safe...growing under large trees that even the grader won't take out...but some are next in line for killing...How deep do their roots go...when would be the best time for transplant? How wide should I dig? Prune before digging? HELP!!!! P.S. They are in bloom right now.

I don't know about transplanting, the soil is too hard and rocky here, but I have taken cuttings of our native clematis here in California. I'm a lousy propagator but these rooted in about a week in sand. Very easy from cuttings. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I've been researching on this forum to see about propagation...can't find much on transplanting..but will try cuttings. Some of these plants are right at the edge of the road...endangered!!!! I'm thinking maybe dig around gently to find their roots and then dig...they're in a mass of wild growth...I'm sure many roots are entangled...I'm very excited about finding these. I'm a hiker and have explored a lot of wilderness around here looking at wild plants...these are the first I've found in about 10 years of looking.

They should be in full bloom in a couple of weeks. It will be my first time to view the masses of beautiful lilies and I can't wait!

The white flowered late blooming one is often referred to as "Traveller's Joy" for obvious reasons. It seeds around everywhere, even in Ontario. I have spent time in the Menton region, but never saw clematis in the wild there. I was a kid then though, and only remember the broom plants, wildflowers and some wild peonies. I do grow the viticella mentioned above, here near Guelph, but never saw it in Provence. Laurel shaped leaves are the sign of the evergreen clematis. Evergreen is a term I would use loosely though. They tend to turn brown in my experience. They do NOT grow in Ontario.

You may be confusing the seed head with the flower. Wild clematis has small white flowers in early summer and large fluffy seed heads in September. Commonly called Virgin's Bower or Old man's Whiskers, it is a common and spready vine. Here is a link that might be useful:

You should remember that in many states it is illegal to dig up plants especially plants on the endangered list. What I would do is only take cuttings then if they are still there in late summer return and take some seed from the plants.

I agree with what you say about digging wild plants. I try to observe that and leave nature alone as much as possible. But I consider humans as stewards for this beautiful place...and I try to balance those two seemingly opposing beliefs. I appreciate that others like you also recognize the true value of natives.
