I've bought several trees over the years from 4 winds, including one last month and another this month. Other than the cost of shipping ( $30. To NY from California) I've been very happy, my plants have been beautiful. Some people buy from Logees, I like to receive my plants larger but you can get 5 inch or less-sized pots. I bought a very nice lime from "Almost Eden" a couple of years back but not seeing any citrus at their site right now. I'm sure others will have suggestions...

I have bought many trees from Four Winds over the years and have always been very pleased. The trees are well packaged and extremely healthy. Other than shipping, I don't understand why anyone would write a negative review of them.

Did research before purchase and Four Winds has been in the bussiness of dwarf citrus since the 40s & 50s. Ordered a Meyer Lemon and a new patented "Tango Mandarin" (Patented in '06, very sweet and seedless) Rcvd early mar, put in 14 in pots and seen 30-40 healty blossoms on the tango, 20-30 on the meyer. Fresh shoots popping quickly. Total height in pot is maybe 2 feet. Decent baby pic here:

Rc. I've never bought one from them. Id bet 8 out of 10 here have and they would all recommend them. Internet review sites can be faked.

rcgeek1, If you just want to have a any dwarf citrus tree to try out, you might want to check out Home Depot, Lowe's etc.local home improvment stores. I am in Chicago, and our local home improvement stores all carry varieties of citrus trees such as Meyer lemon, Celmentine, Kumquats. etc.. I am not sure which month these tree are in, you need to check with your local stores. It is much easy to buy local and save the shipping cost.

In my experience, kumquat is the easiest to grow and fruit indoor in the winter time.

I think four winds would be your best bet.

Four Winds is a very reputable grower. Not to worry at all about them. Almost all their trees are on Flying Dragon rootstock, so they are truly dwarf trees. I've bought several trees from them and they have all done very well.

I actually emailed Four Winds about the rootstocks they use and was surprised to learn that they do not use Flying Dragon anymore and haven't for a while. They said that their trees would actually be considered semi-dwarf, and many are on Cuban shaddock as a rootstock.

What is Cuban Shaddock root stock? Anyone know what's the advantage / disadvantage of using this root stock??

from what I read at another site, this rootstock apparently is a faster more uniform grower from seed than FD and a bit more vigorous after grafting. That makes it more appealing to growers such as Fourwinds who graft a bunch of trees. Not my opinion just what I found by way of google.

I was surprised by the 4 Winds info, so I also contacted them. Was told via e- mail they "never used Flying Dragon". They use trifoliate for mandarins and the Shaddock for sweet oranges, no other specifics provided but said their trees will be dwarf (tend not to be over 6 feet) if grown in pots but semi- dwarf if grown in the ground. I have no issue that it isn't Flying Dragon and have no problem with it, just curiosity.

Thanks, Brett, that's news to me. I had been told they used FD rootstock by some very reputable citrus folks. So, my mandarins are on trifoliate (did they specify which trifoliate by chance?) and then m Midknight Valencia is on Cuban Shaddock. I'll have to read up on Cuban Shaddock, I'm not at all familiar with that rootstock.

Heh... I don't know if you can call it "dwarf" if its size depends on the size of its container. I recently purchased a Four Winds dwarf bearss lime-- the tag says to expect 6-10' at maturity and doesn't mention rootstock.

I live in NW MN and have sucessfully ordered nice dwarf citrus from EdibleLandscaping for years. Mine have all fruited in pots in my windows with never moving outdoors. FourWinds is very reputable and is actually the original "improved" Meyer stock producer, but the are pricey and most larger than quart container sized trees are shipped bare root. Both EdibleLandcaping and Cliftons Nurseries ship potted in their orig soil. I just ordered a Meyer, Bearrs and Limequat today after losing some of my mature trees to spider mites.

I did some googling. It appeares that Cuban Shaddock is less hardy than FD. I am in zone 5. I will stick with FD.

I also read an interesting article at UCDavis site that someone was comparing all the dwarf citrus root stocks , including Cuban Shaddock back in 1950th.
