Tomatopalooza[tm] IV Results

Another year has come and gone for our fourth annual Tomatopalooza[tm] in Raleigh, NC.

We had (according to Craig) over 100 people, although I lost count after 5! Smile Needless to say, there were a lot of folks who came from as far as Ohio, Florida, and even the Caribbean!

We also ended up with 192 different varieties. These are listed below for reference.

My impression of this year was great. It was good to see old friends and new from GW and TV. It was also good to see all the different tomatoes come pilling in! This has been a poor year for both Craig and I, so we

were concerned that we might not have enough tomatoes

available. In fact, I was ready to call the whole thing off since we didn't have Cherokee Purple! Fortunately someone came through with a might fine sample of them

to save the day. (You can't have a tomato tasting without

Cherokee Purple around!)

All 9 dwarves were there! After trying them all, I must confess that I only really liked 2 of the 9. Sneezy and Sleezy A. A couple of the others were OK, but at least

4 of them were major spitters! So, here's to finding better tasting ones in the F2 and beyond.

LBB and Pork Chop were very nice tasting.

My standouts of the day were Tennesse Heirloom, Anna Banana Russian and Jefferson Davis. JD was the sweetest tomato I've ever tasted! Tenn. Heirloom was large, meaty, and had a wonderful tart flavor to it.

Jerry and I did a taste competition between Sun Gold and Sun Gold Select II. SG won hands down. While SGSII is indeed very tasty, it just lacks the punch that SG has.

The tastiest treet of the day was Martha's Tomato sorbets!

The Sun Gold sorbet was quite tasty but the Lime Green

Salad sorbet was out of this world! I'm definitely going to have to try

making some of that later this year!

All and all a very good day filled with tomatoes and good

conversation. I hope all who came had a marvelous time

and will be around for Tomatopalooza[tm] V next July!

Benny, I don't think you need to worry about any of the rabbiteyes that Blueboy grows flowering too early for your area. I grow Brightwell, Becky Blue, and Woodard, and they bloom at the same time as all my other rabbiteyes. I don't think chill hours would wind up making much of a difference in bloom time for you. I have one SHB and it blooms earlier than the rabbiteyes, but despite different chill hour requirements on the rabbiteyes there's no noticeable difference in bloom time. The blueberries are one of the crops I worry about least with late freezes. Brightwell used to be my favorite rabbiteye until I planted some Yadkins. Yadkin is my clear favorite now (as well as the favorite of my wife and children.) Climax might be my third favorite, but it's pretty close to Tifblue, Powder Blue, Premier... all good-tasting varieties but not outstanding flavor at my place. Other rabbiteyes I have that haven't done anything to impress me yet (especially not in a positive way but not in a negative way either) include Bluebelle, Montgomery, and Woodard. Last year six of my rabbiteyes continued ripening significantly later than all the ones I've mentioned so far, and I generally like their flavor about as well as the others: Centurion, Delite, Bonita, Ira, Onslow, and Garden Blue. I've seen some of those varieties listed as everything but late-season varieties elsewhere, but Centurion seems well recognized as a late variety. I haven't really picked favorites from those six and I haven't done a controlled taste test, but several of those seem quite good, and last year, for instance, they bought me about an extra month of blueberries. Bonita, incidentally, may have the prettiest fall color of all the rabbiteyes. If I had to start over again knowing what I know now, I'd want to plant something like 50% Yadkins, about 33% a mix of the six I'm counting as late-season varieties, 10% Brightwell, a showing of Climax, and just enough of the others to continue trialing. My very limited experience with the SHB and NHB is that they're just a lot fussier here than the rabbiteyes -- my two NHB's died after a couple years and my three SHB's have struggled but one has finally gotten established well enough to fruit this year -- so even if the flavor might be better (and even if some of the others taste great elsewhere I wonder how they'd taste if they were stressed), I'm very happy with the rabbiteyes, and I really appreciate trouble-free and reliable fruit. I do want to try some NHB's again, though, in order to try to extend my season on the front end. It seems like there's the potential to buy two or three weeks early. If I do get some I'll put them in a prime location and amend the soil extra generously and mulch and weed and water them extra carefully. Bill Cline particularly recommended Duke to me for an early NHB for my location. A couple other rabbiteyes that I haven't tried that I'm curious about are Columbus and Lenoir.

Welcome to Charlotte. If you live in town, one of your best resources is Wing Haven Gardens & Bird Sanctuary in Myers Park. It's a three-acre garden of densely planted bird-attracting plants and trees with formal and informal garden 'rooms,'and it's open to the public. Been there 80 years. Many of us learned to garden in this region by becoming volunteers there. You can also be a member without volunteering; you get a regular newsletter and discounts on their popular symposiums. Also,there are two big plants sales there, in April & October, and members get to shop on members-only day. Take a break from packing and visit there, hours are Wednesday 10-12 and Sunday afternoons. Day 22 Update! Peppers and lettuce: The same peppers and lettuce from the previous shot. They're in the second-worst part of the UFO grow chamber -- far from the UFO in the center. Nonetheless, the peppers are doing beautifully. I've got a whole tray of them looking just like that. The lettuce, only so-so. They're putting out leaves at a good rate, but two of them never did stand up like I was hoping they would. Next up, the monsters: Okay, these pumpkins are getting a bit scary: The larger of the two now has three tendrils on it, and leaves the size of my outstretched hand. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to keep them in here before they decide to crush everything else in their path, but I'll keep them in as long as I can ;) I realized that last time I forgot to photograph my eggplants. They're doing just shiny: So, now for my crazy okra: If you'll recall, one germinated tall like a freak, but with a strong stem, and dark green leaves; one germinated short with dark green leaves; and two germinated short with pale, chlorotic yellow leaves. I credit this to using old seed. I'm pleased to report that all of them are doing great. The tall one is now working on its second true leaf, while the two chlorotic ones are starting to turn green. All three of the small ones have just started on their first true leaf; I expect they'll look like the tall one (minus the crazy height) next week. My Ronde de Nice squash that just germinated? I transplanted one, and surprisingly, the transplant is doing better than the non-transplant! Now for the one that was my biggest concern last time: my watermelon. If you'll recall, its first true leaves had turned crisp and stopped growing. Well, I'm glad to report that it has not one, but two sets of normal, healthy true leaves now! Here's a shot of some of my miscellaneous squash and melons. Not a complaint from me about a one of them; they're all growing very healthy. My cinnamon basil was looking healthy enough that I felt it time to thin it out into individual pots. The remaining plants in the original pot are below: So, what's my primary concern this time? I'm starting to suspect that I'm getting more growth in the UFO chamber (red, grow) than in the Christmas chamber (blue, veg). I'm not sure yet, though. Now, that is to be expected to some degree, since that chamber is higher wattage (~105W vs. ~85W), it may be more than that. It's really hard to tell, though, because I moved my most mature trays to the red chamber and kept the youngest trays in the veg chamber. However, I do have one good comparison point: basil. I have a basil pot in the veg chamber that's exactly the same as the basil pot in the grow chamber -- same soil, same size, same plants, and same planting time. So, next week I'm going to photograph and measure the two and see how they compare. But overall, another good week :) The plants pretty much take care of themselves (since the LEDs are pretty cool, the soil takes a long time to get dry, so I rarely even have to water). Hence, I've been busying myself readying my outdoors for the new plants, for once it gets warm enough. I'm going to be training my vining plants to strings suspended from guyed poles this year, via vine clips; should be neat to see how they do.

My Husky Red Cherry has just started ripening, and I tasted two of them yesterday. It was very good, tangy with hints of sweetness! Others that I planted; Big Boy, Better Boy, Celebrity has not ripened yet, but plants are very healthy. I hope to be able to make it, even though the variety I planted is nothing special or unique about them. I do have to be in Fayetteville for a chamber music performance on the 29th, so hopefully there's no conflict with rehearsals! :) Soo North Raleigh, NC
