Cedrus deodara 'Eisregen' Planted Today
Comments (5)I got a couple of cedars from Forest Farm in March leafed out like yours, and after posting a question about planting them out or keeping them protected, I was advised not to plant them yet. I am here in VA, and you will face a longer period of freeze risk. You decided it was safe to plant it out so early? On another topic: I now have, waiting to plant, one 'Kashmir', one 'Shalamar', one 'Eisregan', and two of the 'Karl Fuchs.' Can anyone advise me about the growth habits of these? Which is more narrow, which needs more room, or are they all pretty much alike? Are any of them faster growers than the others? I have yet to decide on a specific site for each. --Spruce...See MoreCedrus deodara 'Snow Sprite'
Comments (35)Like other small-growing conifer selections with colored foliage probably apt to become less dwarf and aberrant with age, in addition to being affected by grafted onto vigorous seedling rootstocks. And since there is a whole set of these Goddard deodars, some mixing of similar varieties in commerce seems likely. Plants sold as 'Snow Sprite' that aren't as dinky and delicate as it's supposed to be could be the same introduction behaving differently (becoming more vigorous and less white (and prone to burning)) due to aging or influence of rootstock, or the wrong item could perfectly well have been sold for years under the same name. When it comes to true-to-nameness, there is little safety in numbers. 'Cream Puff' is a most attractive new conifer, one of many selected in Alan Goddard's nursery in Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada. All are gradually entering wider cultivation and are worth looking out for. 'Cream Puff' is the most vigorous of the following, making a small pyramid with creamy white foliage, brighter in summer. Pruning will enhance density... Dwarfer, white-needled forms include 'Silver Mist', 'Snowsprite' and 'White Imp', all worth a try, though prone to wind and frost damage, especially when young --Bloom/Bloom, Blooms of Bressingham Garden Plants (1992, Harper Collins, London)...See MoreCedrus deodara 'Hybridonal'?

Comments (31)you can say the same thing about blue spruce, leyland cypress, white pines like pinus strobus can get very big, lots of conifers With the result that badly overgrown plantings are very common. In my area many structures have tall, out of scale forest conifers looming over them - every year winter wind storms are followed by news reports showing cleft rooms and smashed vehicles, with long, tall branches or trunks lying through or over them. Would you take a picture with 5 or 10 different subjects in view? It is the same with a garden scene, if there is too much going on the impression produced is of a riot or jumble rather than restfulness. Notice that in Japanese gardens - which are generally thought supposed to be serene yet may often employ multiple different visual elements in one area - that the evergreen woody plants are frequently pruned or sheared, with the same treatment being given to all the pines or all the azaleas etc. in each area. This produces a homogenizing effect....See Morefirefightergardener
