You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. I'm sure it would work. However, I wonder if you want a clemmie that is a similar color to the rose? I'm under the impression that more often a contrasting color is selected. But each to his own. Another consideration is the class of the clemmie. Class III clemmies are often easier to grow (blooming on new growth). Class II (I think Ville de Lyon is Class II) blooms on old growth--which often freezes in colder climates (no blooms some years, in other words). The species clematis are also wonderful for growing through roses--especially any of the viticelli clematis (hope I spelled that right). Good luck on your project--I'm sure you will love the results. These are among the most substantial blooming Teas, that are healthy in my organic method garden. I live where powdery mildew is a moderate to severe problem. I spray with sulpher in spring, and these Tea roses rarely need any spraying again until late September. Mme. Berkeley blooms through November here, late even for a Tea in my part of the country. "Souvenir de Pierre Notting" one of the best yellow Teas, I bought it last year and am delighted with it. "Mrs.Dudley Cross" silky ivory-cream edged pink, yellow edged cerise to red in cold weather. "Mme. Berkeley" flowers appear mostly pink, but have yellow bases. Very healthy. all have substantial blooms for this class. My neighbors climbing "Maman Cochet" has very large substantial blooms, and is healthy and she too rarely sprays. Yes, tree roots are a pdoblem for clematis in my opinion. They rob so much of the moisture and nutrients that clematis may well struggle. Your Ville de Lyons are only babies still, and will take several years to reach normal size. Wayside sells 'liner plants' at a premium price. This is rather unfair to unsuspecting consumers in my opinion. Ville de Lyon is a group 3, hard prune type, and I simply shake my head when I see well known nurseries make the mistake of incorrect pruning groups on their web site and labels. It goes to show that they don't really know or care much about the clematis they sell ! Fertilizing your clematis is really easy. Just top dress every season with manure and some rose food and perhaps bone-meal if you have it. About mid season you can repeat the rose food. The soil alkalinity shouldn't be any problem. Clematis do well in just about any soil if they have water and nutrients. My best advice is to water, water, water and top dress with manure and rose food. Your plants will eventually take hold and shower you with flowers once they finally grow up. Ville de Lyon has a beautiful color and it is one of my favorites with it's striking and unbelievable rosy red/pink color ! A real winner. Suzy
