I don't know about baby golds. But most goldenrods will bloom if they are established well and we don't get an early freeze. Even species that normally bloom early (some are in bloom now) will squeak out a few blossoms months off schedule if conditions are perfect (regular rains, good soil, frost free nights). But next year will be a much better show.

I find they like to grow in clumps and support each other when they send up their bloom spikes so I plant them 8 to 12 inches apart. They fill in fast so you will have to dig some out and move them around each year - or you could space them 2 feet apart and let them just fill in on their own but it may take a few years for them to establish a large clump. Until they fill in you will have to keep them weeded. Once they make a dense clump they choke out most weeds on their own.

If you mean by baby golds that they are the cultivar 'Golden Baby', quite probably, as that is available in most places: it would normally be blooming now, one of the earlier blooming types. If cut back, it might bloom for you yet. But, in the normal garden sequence, put 'Golden Baby' at the front of your garden, as it tops out at about two feet, and pair it with other August bloomers. A nice little goldenrod that starts out the season.

Thanks. I do mean "Golden Baby." I have it out near the street with only ice plant in front of it. Actually I've only planted 2 because the soil out there is horrible and it was hard to dig. But now that John posted I know how close to plant the other 2. But since they aren't very tall, hopefully they aren't going to need much support.

I plan to amend the soil on top with composted manure. Hope that works for them. The soil is sandy and very compact. So far I just amended the holes as I planted them, poor things.
