Fall Native Plant Sale at the Chattahoochee Nature Center

Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 5, 6, 7th (9am-5pm)

Fall is really the best time to plant when cooler temperatures allow plants to lose less water and get their root systems established. After another summer went by with watering restrictions and intensification of the water wars, think about creating next year's gardens with colorful perennials that are drought resistant, as you create a water-wise garden. The best time to do that is in the fall. As a general rule, new plants need to be watered on a regular basis once a week for an extended period of time or until the ground is saturated. Watering every day encourages plants to grow a shallow root system, making them less likely to survive drought situations. Reduce your lawn area with new perennial beds with native plants like Black Eyed Susans, Butterfly Weed and Wild Indigos. Native azaleas, Cornflowers, Viburnums and many native species of dogwoods create wonderful areas in your yard. Come and consult with our gardeners to select great native plants that have adapted to this region for thousands of years. New late summer and fall blooming perennials like New England Asters, Goldenrods and Coneflowers plus the Giant Whorled Sunflower (Helianthus verticillatus) will add beauty and interest to your gardens.
