Newby Needs Baby Tips

After discovering this wonder forum I've found that I should pot the tiny clematis I get at Lowes and the roots I mail order until they are ready to go into the garden. My question is exactly HOW do I do this?

Can I pot them for the summer and plant them in the fall? I have no garage, only a shed that will protect them only from getting stepped on. It has NO insulation and won't protect from the cold.

I have some wee ones on the way, so what type of container should I use and what type of planting material should I put in it?

Where should the plants sit? I have an odd combination of sun and shade - being on the west side of a small mountain. We get morning sun late and then they get a good bit of evening sun, unless I keep them under my big tree, which is pretty shady.

I would like a better survival rate than I've been getting so I hope you folks will be able to give me some tips on creating my very own pot ghetto.

Thanks,

Jane
