well if you are anything like me those two are just the begining . Haworthia is one of my favorite geni . I Have used several differnt mixes over the years....with one thing in common ....drainage . The mix I've used the most with Haworthia has been 50% miricle grow moisture control 50% perlite . Taking pups from a Haworthia has been very easy for me. Let them get a bit of size to them first pop them off let them dry for a few days and repot ...never had any problems with them at all that way. As far as a north window...I wouldn't be able to pull that off here, I'd end up with an etoiliated plant but that is in zone 5 I keep mine in east and south facing windows.. and on the deck over the summer months. My cybiforms do get a few hours of easterly morning light , and brigt shade the rest of the day.

Thanks! I don't know if I'll be able to pull off a north window here either. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I was actually debating seeing if they could grow outside. Hens and Chickens will grow down here, but I'm dubious about trying them that way. I guess I will just experiment with lighting and watch the plant for signs. Do Haworthia grow fast? I mean how long does it take for growth to be obviously going right or wrong?

You might want to try a Eastern exposure. I have no idea where you live. They will tolerate any indirect light. They like it cool. I have a friend that lives in Seattle, hers are beautiful, grown outside in a greenhouse, I don't know if it is heated during the winter. They do okay in full sun in Africa, some of them don't grow above the soil until they know it is safe for them to do so, many grow under plants and rock overhangs or on the north side of large outcrops of rocks, so use some judgement, if too much sun, plant it on the north side of a plant. A plant or tree will also protect it against the cold. Put them on a covered patio, in a corner, or back away from a Western exposure. This is not a hard species to grow. Norma

Thanks. I live in South Mississippi so the sun is pretty intense here. Most of the plants I've tried have been okay with a northern light since it is still pretty strong down here. I've grown a kalanchoe under the same conditions and it seemed fine with it. Thanks for the advice!

Your problem may be the humidity. You may need to grow them with a fan going 24/7 These are African plants, and as far as I know Grow in the southern part of africa and not close to the equater or high humidity. Mine are under a shade cloth about 8 ft away from a north wall. At the Huntington they are grown under the benches, which run south/north and at least a 60% shade cloth, they flower and are happy, certain ones you can't water in the summer at all, or water from the top. Watch for mealies, and where you live molds. Fans will hold down the mold. We grow our in pots 3/5 widw and 4" deep, some Haworthia have at least 4" roots,and some are very shallow, keep all dead bottom leaves removed. Must stop wrist is hurting. norma

Don't know how long it takes, but if the plants stay firm & green, I'm guessing they're OK. These seem pretty low maintenance plants.

I grow indoors only & have a number of them. I have only west windows & get a lot of light & on the windowssill, a fair amount of sun. So I keep the Haws on the outer edges of the windowsill or on setups allowing them to be 2 or 3 plants deep away from the window, they're just fine. They like lower light or semi-shade & to dry out btwn waterings. I'd suggest when in doubt abt water, skip it.

Thanks everyone for the advice! It sounds like their not too incredibly difficult. There are several pups on them. Is it true that you can just pull them off and stick them in the ground? Does it need root hormone?

If you reallllly want to remove the pups, let them get a couple of roots first. Spring is the best time to do it. Many hawtorthias are re-potted in spring as they tend to drop their roots in late winter (not sure with your species). Not sure why you want to move the pups? If you go to plant shows, you'll see these plants all happily josting together in small pots. You might think about leaving the pups and letting them fill up the pot. Can be quite interesting looking. At any rate, good luck with yours. And, yes, you can't have just one haworthia!

now I have a Gasteria named after you, and a Haworthia (Snow Flake)They are both beautiful plants. Follow what Pirate Girl says she is accurate, and she lives in New York. Yes you can put them all in the same pot. make sure the soil drain fast, and do what Pirate Girl tells you. Norma
