Gulf Coast Temperature Yo Yo Continues

We have a forecast high of 80 Deg F today and a low 32 Deg in the morning. Isn't that perfectly weird?

I just looked at the weather map and it is down to 32 Deg F 120 miles to the NW and the front is closing in fast. It is already 78 to 80 in the Houston area.

They are also forecasting rain this evening. If it rains this evening it would be very unlikely to freeze by morning. That water gives off a lot heat to freeze from these temperatures.

My Satsumas and my Kat mandarins.are not budding out yet. The limes are blooming. The rest in between. I was afraid of some thing like this weeks ago.

74 degrees and full sun here in VB today, High of 33 and 4 inches of snow forecasted for tomorrow.

tantanman, I just finished covering up a few of my smaller trees with tender leaf buds sprouting out. My newly planted dancy tangerine, Ponderosa lemons, satsuma oranges, and calamondins are all pushing out tender leaf buds. My blueberry is in full bloom. It's only supposed to get down to about 35 the next few nights but a good frost could singe the buds back. I lost lots of leaves over the winter so it would be nice if the new leaves could get a break! My lime is completely leafless and it's pretty much on its own now....if it comes back and makes limes, fantastic, but I don't think it's suited for this area. I forget what variety it is. I changed a lot of things about the way I planted the new mandarin, including putting it in a much more protected place.

Everyone talked around here about how cold it was in 2009's winter, there was snow that glazed into a dangerous ice surface and I fell more than once tending orchards- one time injuring my ribs enough not to be able to sleep on one side for months. For all that, night temps never got much below zero. I agree that local trends are not at all a way to gauge global climate but we are subjective creatures by instinct. I do worry more about global climate change when my local conditions are particularly warm and become more sanguine when things seem closer to normal, like this morning and the next couple weeks of forecast. I welcome the cold, although I'll be outside in the elements every working day. Wish I could tune down the wind though- that's what bites.

Thanks Secret Pal, I received your package this afternoon! I certainly understand about "stuff" that gets one mind off the little things going on the side! However, I hope it was good stuff and not bad stressfull stuff. Firstly, I loved the card... I'm a big fan of Monet and the other Impressionists. A few years ago I got to visit Paris and visit the Orsey Museum which houses many paintings by the impressionists. I haven't guessed who you are yet, but now I'm able to narrow it down. This time the postmark was legible, so I at least know what state the package was sent from =) Thanks for the glad corms. This spring I got some itty bitty glad cormlets that I'm going to try and grow into flowering size ones. It's quite cool I'll actually be able to have flowering glads this year instead of just dreaming about when my cormlets are grown up! I've got the perfect place for the glads and the mums you sent. I will actually have to hang my hanging basket though. I'd been keeping a hanging basket on the ground in a bed to cover up a big bare spot. Oh... I hope YaYa forwarded the letter I wrote for you. I think that would be a good idea.. like "White Elephant Round 2!!" but we could still finish filling up THIS thread with our chatter until it hits 150 msgs? I think I saved a copy of the boxes' contents in my yahoo notepad to refer back to, but I will still "need" a running list of who has what box at any given time or leastwise I think it would be useful - that way if any "stealing" does indeed happen, we can just look at the running list and see which box we are getting when we've been "thieved" :)

It is always such a treat to see pictures of Emmett. He is such a cute toddler! Glad your vacation was refreshing. That is what vacation is all about! I am terribly sorry to hear about the IVF disappointments. Sounds like you and DH had some time to ponder some important life decisions, which are usually best handled when relaxing and getting away from the everyday routines. How life changes in one year!

up here in OK 55 yesterday, 14 right now with an overnight low of 6 tonight. Its been sleeting and snowing all day. Wind gust up in the 20-30mph. Wind chills in the negatives.

I feel for you all down south were this is not supposed to happen. Stay warm.

Thanks for the kind words. It does happen. March of '73, '80, '02 and a couple more I can't put an exact number on. It was 19.5 Deg F in Houston in Mar. 2002. That is the lowest late temperature I remember. My Keraji froze back to almost 1/2" wood. They are normally very cold hardy but it was very young and I had just put it in the ground the year before. So it wanted to grow all winter. The youngest tree I have now is about three years in the ground.

The bad thing is there is little or no warning. Last night and even this morning, NOAA was forecasting 38- 41 deg F. Now they dropped it to 31. They are still behind the curve. Channel 13 has dropped their's to 26 Deg F for the AM low.

I hope you only make it down to mid thirties the next few nights. It is already 32 in Wharton.

you guys got nothing, here in central Canada it got down to -52ÃÂºC(-61.6 ÃÂºF) with the windchill the other day, skin burning cold. luckily in a week they are forecasting near freezing temps. Gonna be a while before I can put my kumquat outside.

Right, but you don't have citrus in the ground that was heated by 78-80 deg sunshine until it had 2 inch new growth then plunged into the freezer.
