1.Number one difference that I have read between dat and brug is that dats don't get woody. Once you see each, you will be able to tell the dif very easily. Even if it's not flowering. Dat flowers don't get as big as brug flowers, and yes sometimes the dats get heavy and point downwards, but usually start out up. Also I have noticed that dat buds always point up, where as brug buds when teeny tiny are upright, but will start pointing downward as about 1/4 of an inch.

2. I would say use the GH. Temps in the 40's should be fine. Not that it is necessary, but, You can try to keep it warmer by having black flooring, or painting milk jugs black and filling them with water. Set them about the GH, they will retain the heat and let it out at night.

3. I personally would go with potting up the cuttings.

4.I say the whole plant of the dat would be better than cuttings. If you wanted, I suppose you could dig up the whole plant, nice size rootball with it, transplant it and take cuttings as well. That way, if it dies from shock and the roots go, you will still have the cuttings. I myself havent done dat cuttings, so..I dont know how easy or hard they are.

5. Yes, you should see flowers next year from cuttings started this fall, or even winter. Mine I started from cuttings last year, kept trying to flwoer all summer, but between bugs, and weather, not to mention a dog or 2 knocking things over...they kept dropping. You will get flowers on your cuttings sooner if the cuttings are from above a "Y". Otherwise, if they are taken from below the "Y" that new plant will have to form a "Y" before it flowers. You may have enough to share cuttings, you may not. Some grow faster than others.

Actually quite a bit and now feel like I'll easily be able to tell the dif between dat and brugs by the wood, and by the position of the buds.

I was wondering if you have a GH as well. Reason I'm asking is because of what you suggested by storing water... something I have tried. IMO, it seemed as if the containers of water cooled way before midnight and was virtually no help throughout the night. Have you experienced something different? I have black fabric on the floor and used painted milk jugs and soda bottles. I'm wondering if lifting them off the floor would make a dif?

Moonie, no I dont have a GH, but last fall was researching alot about them as I was planning on making one myself..just never did it cuz DH won't pay for me to heat it. That was when I read about the milk jugs and black flooring. That sux that it doesnt work, I'm sorry, and thank you for telling me :)
But, honestly I think that if your GH doesnt go below 40, you should be OK.
Karma, on here, has a 'brug house' pretty much just like a GH, and if I remember correctly she keeps it in the 40's.
Hopefully she'll come on and chime in bout how she does it.

About the only thing that's going to keep your greenhouse warm at night and on cloudy days is a heater and it gets very expensive. We only keep the big GH heated to 40-45 F and those heaters are propane. I have a small 10 x 12 that I keep near 70 and that jacks my monthly electric bill to about $800. With the current fuel prices it's too expensive to heat the big GH even just into the 60's. Most plants, even tropicals will do ok in the 40's at night, they just won't grow much. It's fine for brugs, though you'll probably lose foliage and some tips might wither. I let my brugs go dormant in the unheated GH. I've kept cuttings in water all winter inside the house and anyplace that's well above freezing. I also keep newly rooted and some of my more difficult brugs growing throughout the winter. The shorter hours of daylight will cause many of your plants to go semi dormant unless you suppliment. I don't know about lifting jugs but a barrier between the pot and the floor helps quite a bit. I think the best thing to elevate plants on are the wooden palates that hardware stores use for large deliveries. As for daturas I wouldn't bother taking cuttings or digging them up. Just start them from seed.

daniella - heating a GH -is- expensive, no matter which way you go. Even just trying to keep it above freezing isn't cheap. I was heating with a grill type propane tank with one of those little buddy heaters attached and it took 2 tanks each week. Once winter settled in I realized that on the colder nights it wouldn't do the job, plus it burned fuel continually. We started using an electric heater to suppliment. It worked fine, but this year we have gotten a heater that actually has a thermostat. LOL DH said that's going to make the dif, so we'll see.

I hope to hear from KHT. She was the one that sent me the cute little iochroma cutting. Right now I'm a bit worried about it. It'll perk up then wilt again. Hoping to see new growth soon!

Karyn - aren't dats self-pollinating? The lady that offered to let me dig up a few small plants said she didn't know if they produced seed pods or not. She's lived in her house for several years now... the dat came with the house. But, you'd think she'd know if it seeded, hmm?

I think I'm going to go for some type of shelving to elevate my plants. Too many large plants for palates to take up floor space. We built the GH for my palms and bananas. You're right about semi-dormancy. Most of my bananas produced about 2 leaves the whole winter, some of them only one, if that.

Think I'll keep some in the house, and some in the GH. Seems like the safest bet. :)

Daturas are self pollinating and produce seeds that will grow true. I just grow them from seed every year.
