Rose suggestions for pergola

I am in the process of building a pergola on my raised deck and wanted to find a rose to cover it. I recently bought a new dawn rose but am now wondering if it was a good choice and if it will grow large enough to cover it alone. My deck is about 4 feet off the ground and the pergola an additional 8 feet higher and 10 x 8 square.

I would like a very repeat/continual bloomer. Something very hardy and disease resistant because I don't spray. Those are my main concerns fragrance and pink, white or yellow color are a nice bonus. I wonder too if maybe a rose isn't a good choice since they aren't(?) evergreen, hate the thought of bare sticks for half the year on such a large surface. Also worry that it will be a scraggly coverage thats very leggy instead of dense, lush and bushy.

Is there a rose out there thats all of those things or should I just use some type of vine?

I don't know a lot about roses, so maybe someone else will have a better answer for you. I just pulled out my 11 year old wisteria and planted Lady Banks (yellow) roses to cover the arbor over the gate. Lady Banks can eat a whole building, and are fast growers. They only bloom once a year, but that's okay with me.

One solution for the pergola vine might be Confederate Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). It's evergreen but flowers only once in the Spring, so you might want to grow your 'New Dawn' rose on the pergola as well.

You could try a clematis. The group 3s are summer bloomers and tend to have a small rebloom in the late summer/early fall. If you plant the group 3 with a group 1, you could get a spring bloom from the group 1 and a summer bloom with the group 3. The group 3 can then be pruned almost to the ground in late winter and would cover the same area by the time it begins to bloom again. If you did decide on a wisteria, you could try an american one like amethyst falls, which isn't as aggressive as the asian types and will bloom much earlier (they often sell them in bloom). As something totally unvine-like, you could put a climbing rose on each side.

Jim, I believe those zones indicate minimums. Any of those hardy to zone 5 will grow in zone 7 and have enough surviving cane to cover a pergola, but if Z7 is the minimum it will be too tender for a lower zone and may not become a true climber. Does that make sense to you ? You are lucky because survival in Z5 is different from having enough living cane after winter to grow and to cover a pergola. If you have questions just give HCRs a call and Matt will be happy to answer them. I myself try to zone up so my climbers will actually climb and I don't have to worry much about winter protection.

To get back on point, tammy, I think that last sketch is still far too crowded. You need to draw it out to scale and with the plant symbols to scale at their mature size or very close to it. For example, you have what appear to be 4 hydrangeas sited along the arc of the bed. If Little Limes, they will eventually each occupy a spread of approx. 5' so creating a 20' arc.......there is just not that much space available :-) If Limelights, even less space as these will form about a 30' arc. Also, most laceleaf Japanese maples will occupy a space considerably wider than the 5' provided. This may be OK if you don't mind the tree encroaching on the neighboring real estate, whatever it might be............. Photos always help with a visualization of the space but not sure they are a requirement for a simple planting plan of a single planting bed. Generally, one designs the plantings to fit within the enclosure of the bedlines. The exception would be a tree canopy that exceeds the ground plan, but that is typically at a height that won't cause congestion. An issue that photos would help with is the context that the pergola and adjoining beds fit into. Does this abut a terrace or patio? How will these planting beds be seen primarily? From the pergola or a deck/patio? That can also help to determine proper plant placement. If you come back with photos and a scaled drawing with the plants you wish to include, we can make better suggestions.

Thank you all for your input. I narrowed it down to: Madame Alfred Carriere (Positive: can get large, beautiful flowers, thornless, I consider it one of the best fragrances in the local rose garden, one review on HMF says does well for them in this climate. Negative: does not seem to be a monster in this climate and not much bigger than 8 feet in the local rose garden; tried it once and it died despite coddling, said to be very susceptible to thrips and the thrips are horrible here). Barfield White (Positive: can get big, lovely flowers, thornless. Negative: upon research it was trialed here in Albuquerque and the report was that it did not want to grow in this climate). Paul's Himalayan Musk (Positive: Can get big, said to smell great, beautiful flowers, sold by High Country Roses so might well in this climate. Negative: reports of very short bloom season as short as one week according to one report, and said to be not fragrant in dry climates, no examples locally). Mel's Heritage (Positive: can get big, blooms a lot, good fragrance reported. Negative: I don't really like the flower form - I don't like the quilling, thorns). Cécile Brunner (Positive: the ones down the street appear to be happy to grow, gets big enough, nice flower form, longer bloom season with possibility of reblooming form; Negative: fragrance varies, small flowers, not sure about the color. Also, SO common, which is both good - should be easy, and bad - boring?). Rambling Rector (Positive: big, fragrant, impressive, nice hips for fall/winter color. Negative: thorny, brief bloom season). New Dawn (Positive: gets big, reblooms, some fragrance, nice flower size. Negative: very thorny, I'm not that fond of the flower form or color, not sure if the size and plant shape will work well with the pergola). Other options: Wisteria (Positive: gets big, beautiful flowers that fit my color scheme, fragrance; Negative: gets BIG, brief bloom season, messy with leaves and seed pods, requires a lot of maintenance and I'm not sure I want to be balancing on top of a 10 foot pergola multiple times a year). So in the end I settled for Cécile Brunner, since it would be much more likely to be successful in this iffy climate. I still wonder if I should have tried Madame Alfred Carriere (since I do love that fragrance!) but I think that would have been a much more risky choice.

My mother's New Dawn, in Winston Salem, reached 20 feet. It was a monster!!! Bloomed most of the spring and summer. HOw much sun do you get?

New Dawn will definitely cover the pergola. To get best blooms New Dawn will need at least 6 hours of sun and tons of food and water. In order to keep blooming, it has to keep growing and throwing out those big canes is hungry business. You can feed it almost anything, but if you like to add organics, try alfalfa meal or pellets (just as long as they don't have added salts). Alfalfa meal contains a growth hormone that works wonders with roses. Also keep in mind that a climbing rose will not begin to reach its full potential until its third season in the ground. Its know as sleep, creep, leap. The first year they sleep (grow roots), the second year they creep (begin to grow canes), the third year they leap (throw long canes everywhere).

New Dawn is the continuous blooming sport of Dr. Van Fleet. Every once and awhile a nursery will fail to weed out a New Dawn that has "sported back", so if your rose gets at least 6 hours sun and you give it food and water and it still fails to rebloom, go back to the nursery for a replacement.

By the way there is a sport of New Dawn called Awakening, that has more petals and to my nose more fragrance. I have both, they are wonderful climbers, the standard by which all other climbers are judged. They are both healthy without spraying if that is your preference. While you may get some damaged foliage if you do not spray, it will not impact the health of the rose.

Two of the best nurseries in the country for garden and landscape roses are located in South Carolina. These people are fantastic local resources for adding fragrant, healthy, easy care roses to your garden.

Amy - Thats what i'm hoping for. I get dappled sun all day long. That was another reason I chose it. Everything I read said it was shade tolerant and while I wouldn't consider that area shaded necessarily it is certainly not full sun.

Jody thanks so much for your informative post. I am new to roses and my head is swimming from all the reading i've been doing lately. Who knew there was so much more to know then your basic color size and zone? I now no longer buy any rose unless I look it up and read every thing I can find on it and then i'm still nervous and wondering if maybe there isn't a better one out there. I considered awakening, iceberg, cecile brunner, crepuscule and climbing clotilde soupert but new dawn just happened to be at a local store for a very good price and since he was one I was deciding between he came home with me. Its a gorgeous rose with nice long healthy green canes and some vicious thorns but I think it will be beautiful on the pergola. I will definitely look to see if I can find some roses with less thorns to fill in around it.
