Help, I am trying to root....

Help Anyone, I received some cuttings in a trade and they were pretty dry by the time they reached me, but I have them in a small tank with a bubbler. The branches look very green and they aren't getting any of the little white bumps. I keep changing the water but there is some gooy looking stuff hanging around the stems. ( it almost looks slimy) Should I take them out of the water and stick them in sand? Thanks, Linda

So far this year I have had pretty good results rooting in soil. Weather you do it in soil or water, I found that rooting hormone really helps.

If there is slimy stuff you need to take those cuttings out of there and rinse them off in lukewarm water under the sink. Then if there is any mushy parts on the bottom, you must cut it off up to where there is firm tissue.

If you are water rooting the water has to stay very clean. Sometimes when it is warm out still, the bacteria will grow easier. It is hard to say the reason the water got bad in the bubbler. I always try to bleach out everything before I use it and rinse well. This can keep some of the bacterial count down to begin with.

Once they are all cleaned up you can either continue to water root in a glass but you must change the water daily. I only put a few inches in the glass or sometimes they will rot. Or you can try putting them in some potting soil with perlite mixed in for drainage. Do not over pot. If you root them in dirt make sure not to overwater, just keep them slightly moist. Give them some indirect sun. If your branches wilt you can mist them slightly a few times a day.

Alberta is correct Alexa on the catt in bark. Jam the oldest pbulb/rhizome on the edge of the pot so the new growth has room to grow for a couple of years. After repotting a catt, I don't water for a week to let the wounds heal, then resume a regular schedule. You do not have to sterilize your cutting tools between each cut :>) Sterlize after you are finished with the plant. You still need to stabilize the plant in the pot. You don't want the plant wobbling when you move it. If you don't have a rhizome clip, use a couple of stakes (bamboo skewers work great) put one on each side of a pbulb and then use twist ties to tie the stakes together or the pbulb to the stake. Sorry to have chimed in so late. I agree with the forum. You have to keep on trying. This is how my first experience with rooting went. I had heard so much about the baggie method. Adding your favorite rooting mix to a baggie, dipping cutting into root hormone, and then placing cutting on heat mat to root. Never worked for me. I substituted the heat mat for a heating pad. I really think the whole heating pad idea was just bad for me. It never worked. In fact, once I tried Bill's method, I never had any luck. I actually added a whole raw egg to my mix and that really helped but I don't want to give you info on yet another way of rooting. Sometimes too much info can be detrimental. I really hope you do try rooting again. I had many rooting blunders until I became successfull. In fact, I gave up for many, MANY years at rooting cuttings, but once I gave it a try again, I rooted my cuttings. Good luck and keep us all posted!! Andrew

Fairegold, I'm usually too lazy to give that kind of guidance so I agree, it's good that you're doing it. The one answer I always want to post but never do is when people ask for pictures of a specific item such as: "Show me pix of your silgranit sink" I'd like to guide them to the FKB which has categories for exactly those kinds of specific items but the one time I did that the results weren't positive so now I just keep my mouth shut.

Alyssa is only in kindergarten and it is wonderful that they have the children start knowing that you should help out others. Her school has been having fund raisers for a family that the Mother and 3 of her four children were involved in a very serious car accident. Two little ones have broken legs and the third little girl that is in the third grade has had lung damage and has been in a coma for many days. The latest news on them is that the 2 children have gotten to go home in casts after surgery and the other little girl is now responding to pricks on her hands and feet and also has a gag reflex, which they say is a good sign. Many prayers and help have been going out for them all. Amber is a room mother at Alyssa's class and she said she used to see that family waiting to go into the class rooms and then one morning, they were not there. Then she realized who they were. Sue

I have great results with soil rooting so far. Because it is still nice and warm out there. Now when wintertime and cutback time comes...I think I will try the water method.

If you are seeing any slimy goo keep them out of the water. Dry them off and cut any soft spots. You might want to try a dip in diluted hydrogen peroxide for a couple minutes then let them dry again before putting them in soil. I agree with SJN, barely moistened soil, do not overwater. Good luck.

Good advice. Those are some easy to root brugs. I would clean them up snip off mushy area and the dip in rooting hormones. Then they would hit the small pot with soil.

Thanks everyone, I am taking them out asap. I have never had cuttings do this before. I put them in a clean tank with clean water and even added a capful of peroxide everytime i changed the water. I don't know what made them get slimy. I apppreciate the help. Linda
