Something chewing on my Oak Leaf Hydrangea

Well, one of them anyway. It's a dwarf variety whereas the other is larger growing one.

Something is chewing off the stalks and discarding the leaves on the ground.

Squirrels, maybe? I figure if it's rabbits or deer they would not be ignoring the foliage like they are. I have a 6 foot privacy fence and have never seen a deer in the yard but rabbits are another story.

I'm experimenting with placing some of my Jack Russell's stools around the perimeter to see if that will deter them/it. I have to shovel it up off the lawn anyway. Of course, if it's my dog that's the culprit (he's been known to chew on my lantana) that won't do any good. :-)

Ideas on what might be doing this?
