Rust on potted clivia - what should I do?

hi

My youngish clivia is growing well outside in a pot. It has new leaves emerging from both the centre and the outside. It also has rust on the biggest leaves and most of the tips are a bit snagged. Should I bin the plant and start again or try to cure it? I am concerned that the fungus will spread in my garden. I have it for a few months and I bought it (naivly) in this condition. Should I remove the worst-affected leaves? I could plant it in the ground. Prepared to be brutal.

You can just spray a few times with a fungiside. Rust is not serious and should be relatively easy to cure like daylily rust. I do not believe brutal treatment is relly neccesary.

Hi Joanna,
You could try a handful of corn meal, &/or cornstarch, stirred in a bucket of water. Wait 20 minutes, stir it, let the grains settle a minute, then use some to water the plant. It's good on rust, blackspot, and most other fungi.
You could try to gently tug, the yellowed leaves, to see if they will come off. Check for bugs too, with a magnifying glass, got mealies? Rust seems to go more, for unhappy plants, so how are it's cultural conditions, is it in too much sun?
Look out, it stains paint, and it's basically the same as corn based, pre/emergent weed killer, so avoid seed areas.

You know I love these kitchen cures that actually work, what a hoot! For some reason my GW search on this isn't coming up, but it's on other threads. It worked for me on roses, phlox, and a fig.

A lot depends on what you're planning on doing with the daffs. Are you trying to get them to bloom in the pots? If so, you needed to chill them before giving them enough warmth to sprout leaves. If you're going to stick em into the ground when it warms up, don't worry about the roots; transplanting them will probably be worse than leaving them underpotted for a while. If you're planning on moving the pots around, leaving them outside in the spring and summer, chilling them in the winter, and bringing them inside to force in the early spring, you probably want a deep pot so the bulbs can be planted several inches under the soil surface. Hi, The seedlings are best grown under ideal conditions for as long as possible. They can tolerate more "natural" conditions including drought, chill, etc., but ideal conditions accelerate growth. As for mature clivias (12+ leavevs produced), holding off on watering and nitrogen during autumn and winter is what many of us tend to do. The nitrogen encourages leaf growth over flowering. We tend to use 0-10-10 (bloom rite)with our last watering(s)in Oct./Nov. The bud then forms with the "chill" and starts developing. About Feb. or so, add nitrogen back in with your usual fertilizer. Teisa...My daughter got a job at UT Medical Center and will be moving to Knoxville. Maybe someday we can meet up and I'd bring you some clivias that I want to cull from my collection...free. I have too many! Here are some of my yellows that has grown on me that you might want some. Take note that they are planted in 8-10 inch clay pots so they are big sized and hard to pack and ship out. if you have a spot for them, plant them now. Fall is the BEST time to plant perennials. Water them in well, they'll be fine, as long as they're in good shape when you plant them. I'd prepare the hole, make it about twice as big as the pot the plants is in now. Enrich w/some peat moss or compost if avail. Add in some gravel if your soil is wet/slow to drain. I had something that looked like rust, but was a reaction to some Orthonex that I sprayed on the clivias for scale. It was unsightly for a while, but the browned tips eventually dried and it doesn't look too bad. I will try an oil spray next time!

Hi Rick,
Why oil? Somehow oil doesn't sound clivia friendly. That sounds like it might trap moisture IN the plant and risk problems? :>
The plant seems to tolerate treatments better if it has acclimated outside, in it's pot.
