what should I do with roots that are out of the bottom of pots?

I planted several daffodil bulbs in pots,alone or two or three together.several days ago I looked at the pots and saw that roots are out of the bottom of the pots.I think my pots are suitable for these size bulbs but I don t know why roots are out of pots.I use a fertilizer every three week but growing of daffodils are stopped and they have not new leaves for growing.what should I do?new big pots?It seems that every new pot will became small for these roots.should I plant them in ground(that I do not want)?Is this problem could effect on this or next year flowering? I have this problem also for my Amaryllis.

Roots growing into the air will stop further growth. If your pot is on the ground they will grow into the ground. Your pots are probably too small or at least too shallow. Al

Some of my marginals seem to get pot-bound really quickly. But if we're going to keep them in reasonably-sized containers, I think they just have to live sort-of pot-bound. I think they're putting their energy into making roots, rather than growing upwards. What did you fertilize them with? I would just leave them alone and use fertilizer that promotes top growth, rather than root growth. I think that means nitrogen more than phosphate....but I'm not sure. Plants seem to do what they need to do, so maybe you took too many roots away and left too much top growth when you repoted?? I say just leave it alone for awhile and the top will eventually start growing again.

I am doing same with all my Fig trees. But I have one rule which never allow roots to grow through the container bottom. I block all these holes and drill holes on the side of the container. You was lucky your tree still young and you was able to pull it from the ground. When the tree gets old and established it is impossible to move it with its roots sticking from the drainage holes. I use the shovel and cut the roots from the side holes easily and move the pots. One of my trees is over 6 feet tall and still I can move it easy. Easy is not that easy but I can do it.

Are you sure they aren't rootbound? If the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot, I'd say they are rootbound! Even if the roots aren't filling up the entire pot, you're gonna need to repot the plants so that those roots aren't sticking out. When that happens, I usually just get a deeper pot with the same diameter size. Good luck, Gabi

John: I've had figs roots invade by potted blueberries more than once. Those invaders were about pencil size when found. Not sure if the blueberries ever rooted out. If they did it would likely be much finer roots unless it was yrs in the making. In short your roots are more likely invaders than bb finding their way out.

A lot depends on what you're planning on doing with the daffs. Are you trying to get them to bloom in the pots? If so, you needed to chill them before giving them enough warmth to sprout leaves. If you're going to stick em into the ground when it warms up, don't worry about the roots; transplanting them will probably be worse than leaving them underpotted for a while. If you're planning on moving the pots around, leaving them outside in the spring and summer, chilling them in the winter, and bringing them inside to force in the early spring, you probably want a deep pot so the bulbs can be planted several inches under the soil surface.

Daffodils do not need chilling to grow and bloom well. The only plantings I have had that did not bloom well were in an area with too much shade. lina grower your posting does not mention your zone and your page giving your country does not help many of us "geographically challenged". Al
