roots coming out of bottom of pot

I have a few cuttings that are in 4 inch pots or smaller. None of them are root bound, but the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot. What, if anything, should I be doing?

Are you sure they aren't rootbound? If the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot, I'd say they are rootbound! Even if the roots aren't filling up the entire pot, you're gonna need to repot the plants so that those roots aren't sticking out. When that happens, I usually just get a deeper pot with the same diameter size.

They are not rootbound yet, but the roots have grown from the bottom of the cutting through the bottom of the pot.....These cuttings are only a few weeks old.

It is better to have roots first than having leaves and no roots. You did not say what you did with the cuttings that had roots. If they had roots, I hope you potted them in a good soil with good drainage and kept them in a decently warm place so that more roots and shoots develop. If you have already done that and still not leaves, make sure the cuttings have not rotten due to dampness of the soil. Good luck.

Some of my marginals seem to get pot-bound really quickly. But if we're going to keep them in reasonably-sized containers, I think they just have to live sort-of pot-bound. I think they're putting their energy into making roots, rather than growing upwards. What did you fertilize them with? I would just leave them alone and use fertilizer that promotes top growth, rather than root growth. I think that means nitrogen more than phosphate....but I'm not sure. Plants seem to do what they need to do, so maybe you took too many roots away and left too much top growth when you repoted?? I say just leave it alone for awhile and the top will eventually start growing again.

I would make a nursery bed and plant them out so they can have a full season of growth, which is obviously underway. My concern about keeping them in pots, including larger ones, is that you will be setting them out shortly before flowering time, and emergence of the flowers may be interrupted. I'm seeing half-opened drumsticks flopping all over....

Linda One of my chores in the fall is to dig out my half buried pots, wich have holes made on the sides to let the roots go out for grazing for nutrients. Here in Zone 5 I need to start digging out pots by the end of September to avoid doing it in cold rainy October. I cut/shave the roots and clean the pots sides before storing. I have closed the bottom holes in pots during potting because roots going through the bottom holes are difficult to cut and had given me problem. At this time I am not sure if letting some roots grow outside during the growing season will extend the period betwen root pruning or not. Only time will tell but I hope it will help extend.

i like when this happens but at the same time i dont. if the moisture level around the root gets too dry, the fuzzy white hairs may die. sometimes i just gently tuck the roots back into the pot if they arent too long and brittle

Just curious what cuttings are they? If it were me and the cuttings wern't rootbound I would just try to repot (reposition) the roots in the same pot and see if that works.
