need help identifying a lime variety

Hi, I have a lime tree in my back yard that was planted by the previous owner that I can not identify. I first thought it was a key lime but the fruit is bright yellow not green. It looks more like a lemon but is small and oval the exact size and shape of a small egg. the inside is yellow as well, the fruit does not taste like a lime more like a lemon and yet the owner assured me it is a lime. Does anyone know what it is and what it can be used for.?

everything I've read states that limes when ripe are indeed yellow. Big news to me. I actually got a "yellow" lime. I found it to taste still like a lime, but more lemon flavor too.

Sure be nice to live in an area where thesetrees culd grow inthe yard!

My Bearss/Tahitian limes are indeed lemon-yellow when really ripe, and I find that the fragrance and flavor is milder at that time, as well as a little off. I actually like them best when they are just starting to get a little yellow on them, but are mostly green. When yellow they look exactly like grocery-store lemons, and sometimes I have to scratch at the skin and smell it tell the difference after they've been sitting around for a bit.

You can also check by crushing a leaf and smelling it, at least if it's supposed to be the same type of tree I have.
The leaves smell very "limey". I doubt your tree is a Mexican/Key lime since the fruit tends to be much smaller--like a big walnut maybe?--though they also turn yellow when very ripe and are quick to fall off the tree.

I find that lemons tend towards being quite seedy, and Bearss/Tahitian limes are seedless. Also the limes have very thin skins compared to grocery-store lemons, at least where I live.

Thanks for your answer! Ugli (or tangelo) is getting close, especially by look, my fruit ins question's skin is thicker and even more gnarled though. The flesh is clearly lemon flavored(a milder watered down version), without tangerine or pomelo flavors, and deffinitely not sweet....Just got done picking- that one little tree gave over 200 lbs. this year.I do have pictures, just didn't know how to post...I can email- TX!

A rootstock is a plant onto which another variety is grafted. Citrus are often grafted to trifoliate orange or hybrids of trifoliate orange because their roots are in many ways superior to other citrus roots. Grafting is also done because it takes most citrus many, many years to give fruit if grown from seed. If you graft a mature branch from a citrus tree onto a rootstock you get a fruiting tree without having to wait years and years and at a much more manageable size. Grafting (basically) means you grow a rootstock tree, lop the top off, and stick the top half of a different kind of tree on top. There's more too it than that but that's the important bit. The good variety gets the strong roots of the rootstock and you end up with a stronger tree. Unfortunately, the rootstock will sometimes try to take over by sending up suckers, which are branches from the original tree. If they aren't trimmed off they can suck the energy away from the "good" variety, killing it and leaving you with a rootstock tree. This is what probably happened to your rootstock tree. Trifoliate orange and its hybrids are (unfortunately) inedible and really rather nasty, so this is not what you want. Assuming they're grafted, the trees that haven't been taken over by their rootstock could bloom and give you fruit this year if all their needs are met (light, water, soil, nutrients, etc) because any grafted citrus tree should be all mature wood that can give you fruit.

Not sure, but as fignut pointed out about the 'scalloped' leaves (aka serrated, saw-tooth like edges?), I do have a Verte fig specimen that has that. Just went out to check. Older leaves (bottom) are smaller 3 lobed and highly serrated. Younger leaves (top) are much bigger and much less serrated but also showing signs of 5 lobes?! Sorry no fruit yet... George (NJ).

Look for replacements at nearby outlets during flowering time, unless you order off the web you are going to be doing that anyway. So that identification of exact kind before shopping becomes somewhat irrelevant. If it turns out there is no place there where you find replacements, so that you have to shop outside your area then at that time discovering the name before purchase becomes necessary.

Yellow, egg-shaped, and a "different" taste make me wonder if it may be a limequat -- a hybrid of key lime and a kumquat?

laura...my Bearess limes do the same thing.And I do prefer to pick them when they just start to yellow up.But if you scratch & sniff the skin then you'll know that its either a lime or a lemon.***Suzanne

My guess - you have a Mexican "Key" lime. They have a unique flavor... - Bubbacat
