Gasterias and etiolation

treehaus

I have a Gasteria, the tag indicates Gasteria nigricans variegata, whether this is its proper name I do not know. I bought it in 2001, the mother plant is fairly old now, and there are many offsets. I noticed recently that the mother plant appears to have become somewhat etiolated. The form is no longer tight and symmetrical. How do I know if it is etiolation? I know what etiolation looks like on plants with prominent stems, but I'm at a loss here. I suppose a picture might help, I will try to post one later.

Thanks in advance.

Mike
