Wow! what a beautiful jade plant you have there. I have been trying to propagate a new jade plant and I know how slow they grow. Thanks for sharing.

Now that is a Jade!!! From top to bottom, it is a splendid thing you've done. Without any doubt, Silverina with thrive under the loving care of her new owner.

Salvaging plants is a cool "service" we can provide for our hobby. It's a source of spectacular specimens that reduces the load our hobby puts on the natural reserves of these plants. That might not be such a big deal with an imported Jade, but many native species are under the slow, creeping attack of habitat loss from development.

I collect Jade plants and I'm impressed, when it leafs out it is even going to be more amazing. I just betcha it will flower at Christmas. Norma

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to post :) Josh, I somehow knew you'd be the first, LOL! I checked Silverina over today and I see the tiniest little nubs of future leaves on two different branches! It's been a month since she went thru her brutal upheaval so that's not too bad of a timespan for her to be showing some signs of growth :) I'll be sure to post pics again at intervals in the future.

That thick stump that I got from the gardeners last year and was so panicked about trying to root, well it too is doing nicely, well rooted and filling out. I have so many jade plants now that I don't even know how many I have. I'm obsessed, I admit it, LOL!

I have a similar sized Jade i found tossed away in the empty lot next door three or forur years ago.Like yours,as huge as it is,it's just a part of what must have been a giant Jade,as their were other big pieces tossed away. Then the 07 freeze mushed a few more branches after it had rooted in my front yard. So,i have what is a really fat trunked 5' Jade-with a tuft of branches. Not the usual globular mound Jade.
One man's trash is another's..lol..

Wow! A jade like that in a nursery near me would cost a fortune, if I could find one like that at all around here! You are very lucky. Enjoy!

Silverina's doing great! I'll try to take another picture of her tomorrow. She's leafing out nicely on her tips but I'm sure it'll be another year or two before she really starts looking good again.

theres a orchid green house about 50 miles from were I live,the guy has one in his entrance.I go to his xmas open house every year and its blooming usually.its probably about six feet tall and maybe that wide. first time there I asked him about it and he said that at a plant show in michigan he bought it off someone for two hundred dallars.and waters it once a month weather it needs it or not.

Now do you all believe that I know about my "Jade" plants, she can be used as a Christmas tree. Watch for the flower buds to show this next week. Norma

Norma, I hope you're right about her getting buds this week. My other jades have been in bud since late Oct. and flowering since Nov. but no sign of buds on Silverina yet. I look forward to using her as a Christmas tree in the future : )

hi again, what a fantastic jade..did it bloom for christmas?
I have a question, if you were to cut off one of those big lims, how would you go about rooting it?
I know about rooting a small one, but I was thinking being so big would it work or not, just wondering?

Hi, Linda,
any one of those limbs could be rooted successfully.
You'd simply cut it from the plant, let the cut develop a callus (probably one to two weeks), and then stand it up in an empty terra cotta pot until it begins to grow roots. After that, you pot it in very fast-draining soil (I like at least half perlite) and support it while it establishes a new root-ball. No water for a week after potting, then resume watering as needed.

I don't know beans about Jade plants other than I KILL them. But I know people who grow them...usually in the shade...I've never seen one bloom and never even knew they bloomed until I read this. So do they need more sun to bloom? I think too much water is a real problem here and they end up rotting.

I live in FL also, I have had a Jade tree for about two years, but you are right...mine have NEVER bloomed! Rain and very high humidity is definitely a big problem here for growing Jades/Succulents, that is why I use "Al's Soil Mix". It is very fast draining and keeps the soil from staying too moist. I bring mine under the entry way cover when our rainy season starts. I keep my Jades and succulents in Full sun. They really like it, although for me they STOP growing by late May early June. The weather is just way too hot and humid. My jades starts
growing again when the weather starts cooling off, around Nov thru May. I have not given up with the flowers though, I am hoping one day I will get mine to flower...at least I am hoping. I know they need cold(not freezing) temps to help them flower.

I have a small collection of Succulents, Here's my jade, I just pruned it appx. 2 1/2 months ago, it is just starting to put out new growths...I know its not a pic of blooming jades, but I just wanted to say If I can grow it, I'm sure you can too! I have seen pics of your beautiful plants... Give it another try, they are almost as addicting as Hoyas, LOL...

Josh, you brought up a good point..you stated, "all my jades are growing now."
Do Jades ever truly go dormant? Remember I repotted mine one size up last summer? The trunks look like they're about to bust the new pot..lol..plus it's grown taller since.
Since you're in CA, and your Crassulas are growing, that could explain the reason, but I'm in gloomy Il..so, my question is, do Jades go dormant? Toni

For me my Jades go dormant for the summer months here in Florida end of May thru mid Nov...too hot and humid. They stop growing and lose the pretty colors. I thought I read somewhere that Jades stop growing when the temps reach 90°? But I am not positive on this?

I think in parts of Ca, where they don't have extreme weather often, I would imagine they grow most of the year, but I'm guessing that there are some months where they go at least semi dormant if the weather is either too cold or too hot? Is this the case for you Josh?

My jades go dormant during the dry hot peak of summer, maybe July and August (I usually lose a few leaves, which tells me to cut back on water). My jades start to show tip growth again in November (a good time to leaf-pluck and prune). Then they'll slow down from February through March. April - May is when the most significant growth season begins.

All I can say is WOW...
I've been a lurker for a long time but I felt compelled to actually sign in and tell you how absolutely stunning this jade is. I'm so envious. I dream of having one like this. But unfortunately, I don't think I have the talent (or more importantly the CLIMATE) to ever have such a beauty.
