HotLips should have sprouted and leafed out by now

Shouldn't it? Both HotLips and the pineapple sage/salvia both were clipped down to about 12-16" after frost late last fall. I covered each with a big plant pot suspended above to keep the rain off the stalks/freezing damage.

Should have left them alone.

If they were going to come back, I guess they would have by now given Miss Huff lantana is awake and growing.

Mine are all back now, and have been about a month. In fact, the one i gave a pretty severe haircut early this spring, knowing it might kill it. Where i put it, it's overshadowing a peony i want to get bigger, so if had died i wouldn't have been too upset. It didn't though. I need to take some cuttings and deliberately kill it but i have a hard time doing that. It's not in a place where i can easily dig it out to move it.

Well, that's confirming what I thought. Thanks Tam. Guess that will give me about three more square feet of planting area and about 12 sq feet of air space above the garden. Those two plants got huge and shaded more area than I would have preferred.

As long as the twigs are still limber and green under the bark, you should be ok. Paw Paws are definitely one of the later plants to leaf out. Flowers emerge first, around the same time as the lilacs bloom, and then the leaves gradually emerge. Here in Michigan, my trees often don't have a full-looking canopy of leaves until mid-June, depending of course, on the coolness or warmth of the spring weather.

The root will come out first. Then the stem. The plant will be confused, because it will not be allowed to send the root and stem the direction they should grow, because the bag will not allow the root to go down, and the stem to go up. I wait until I have a root and a stem with leaves (cotyledons) that are starting to turn green, then I plug them into a tray of starter mix. I find if I put them into starter mix too early, when only the root is evident, usually cotyledons do not shed the seed shell (helmet heads). Then you have to keep it wet (I use saliva) and hope it comes free before it dies, or do micro-surgery to save it. Fingernail clippers is the best tool I have found to try to remove the "helmet". If you can get it wet enough, a knife blade may be successful in prying the shell off. My seedlings go under lights, because I start them early enough that it still freezes every night. When I run out of space indoors under lights, they go to a heated greenhouse. If your nights are reliably warm enough, I see no reason you could not grow them completely outside. 50F may be too cold, but 59F may be warm enough. But, if it gets too cold, your effort was wasted. I have no idea how reliable your temperature forecasts are. Sun? Shade? If they sprout in the sun, leave them in the sun. If they sprout indoors, see "hardening off".

Buds, as in flower or leaf buds? If these azaleas are supposed to bud, then leaf out then I'm going to wait. Think Magnolia or Forsythia. If they are supposed to leaf out and bloom simulataneasly I still might wait. But if they should leaf out and then bloom, well then they are cashed. SO do your azaleas leaf out then bloom??

Thanks everyone! Yes, I am feeling better now that I see some "green"! However, not all the buds are showing green yet! Sigh.... at least my tree is actually showing more "green" than my neighbours', which were planted even later than mine last fall! Ouch... nutsaboutflowers, don't worry, it's just the way the photo was taken. The tree positioning is good - even though I could not pick the tree, I could tell them WHERE to plant it last year! Oh yeah, they tried to plant it way too close to the house so I told them "NO" and I got my way... hee! If I took the tree out, I think I will be in trouble with the developer! But I guess I wouldn't know what might happen until I try.... hmm... maybe not! LOL

Mine all just came back within the last week. Some have just started showing up in the last couple days. I was getting worried as well - First though all were lost, then was convinced half had died, but they are all up. Don't give up hope!

yeah, that's my problem too dottie- they get too big! But they're so pretty i hate to cut them back.... and i really hate to outright kill it. But i don't want to move the peony either, since they resent that big time. It's scarlet o'hara and i paid a pretty penny for her, so i guess i'll have to buck up and either trim the heck out of hot lips and/or relocate some cuttings. Here's hoping yours show up in the next week r 2. You are just a bit cooler than me so i'll cross my fingers for you!

Too late..the deed is done and now I have lots more space for my beloved coleus.
OK..pulled 2 perennials/bought (don't ask how many) more annuals and perennials. One of those days and for these I haven't the holes already dug.
Good thing tomorrow is supposed to start off cool again.

My Hot Lips also got too big last year, but I whacked it way back a couple of weeks ago after it started to leaf out and it's already filled out and blooming. Sometimes it pays off to be hard-hearted in the garden.

This winter with large temperature drops, especially that last one, took out a lot of marginally hardy plants. Your two salvias were among the most often cited I've heard, especially if they were under three years old established. Older specimens died back more than usual, but came back with new growth. Agastache rupestris was also hit hard; couldn't take that last big drop in temperature.
