Cannot find Emilia Plater

Hi, I would really love to get Emilia Plater, but so far I have only found it to be sold out (Joy Creek and Brushwood). Does anyone know what nursery offers it for sale here in the USA? I've seen it available in the UK!

Maybe another way would be to see if anyone wants to trade a rooted cutting of it. I have tons of named daylilies and some Japanese Irises, I could offer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought my 'Emilia Plater' from Plant Delights several years ago, but they are not currently selling it.

I have not purchased from them before, but Digging Dog Nursery in California has it listed in the online catalog.

It is also listed in Hummingbird Farms online catalog for 2010. They are located in Maine, and they have not yet updated their clematis list for 2011. I did send them an e-mail last week asking if they had a clematis variety not listed in their catalog, and Cindy replied quickly. I have never purchased from them before either.

Thank you Kathy for the helpful information. I emailed Hummingbird Farms and am waiting to hear back from them. I was more interested in them because they had serveral clematis on my wish list. They didn't show any prices, except for shipping. Thanks again for your help.

I might rethink planting a type 2 clem on a Harry Lauder. One of the pleasures of the HL is its winter silhouette with interesting branch shapes. Type 2 clems aren't usually cut to the ground in winter (you can do it, but will lose all the first bloom, and some won't bloom as well in the second bloom in my cold zone 5.) If you don't cut it to the ground you will have all the scrappy dead vines left in your winter HL which will interfere with its bare-branched silhouette. At least consider a type 3 or choose your type 2 carefully so that you get one of them that seems to bloom longer so you won't lose too many blooms. My Daniel Deronda, a type 2, will bloom almost all growing season, even after it has winter killed to the ground, and I imagine that there may be some more. I mostly put type 1s and 2s where I don't have to see the dead vines in winter. The other thing to consider is the ultimate size of the clematis and the HL. A large, fast-growing clematis can overwhelm a young or small shrub. I tried the strategy of planting clems on the opposite side of the shrub from where I want to eventually view them so that they would grow through, and I find that I prefer the ones where I planted them on the side from which I wanted to view it. The grow up the shrub just fine in my garden. It may be a difference in sun angle and intensity between Bob's CA location and my NH location.

Robert, both of my Blue Angels are very faintly blue and are very difficult to take pictures of and get a good representative picture of. To me they are very pale blue and almost look silvery blue. Then again, being pale colored ones they will tend to fade very bad in direct sun, both of which mine are planted in. Perle d'Azur is much more blue than Blue Angel. As for the rest it is kind of difficult to describe them accurately. I know I have pictures of all of them but finding them might be a challenge. Blue Angel taken while the plant was in the shade. Perle d'azur This is either Emilia Plater or Prince Charles. I didn't change the name when I uploaded them so can't remember which is which since the two are planted closely together.

Lovely Pat. I just love your arbor. Too bad about Hakuree. Mine is in bloom today as well and all blooms have a slight jasminey fragrance. Don't give up yet as it might just be a maturity thing and it will develop it. Also remember that some plants have fragrance at a specific time of the day to attract pollinators. Early morning or late evening tend to be the time of day that most plants that have "fragrance periods" tend to bloom. Don't you just love heptacodiums? I like the fact that the blooms are late in the season when little else fragrant can be in bloom. Unless you cut those trunks back on a yearly basis and train the tree as a shrub, you are going to have little luck getting Arabella to climb/scramble through it unless you tie the vines of it onto the trunks.

How beautiful! Your combinations are stunning! I only wish I could grow any clematis! I have a 5 year old Henryii that gets wilt every year. This year it didn't even have many flowers before the wilt hit it. I just planted a Carnaby and Fireworks! Also am nursing a Multi-Blue and a Dorota in pots. I don't know when to plant them. Supposedly they are 2 year old plants. I have had them for almost 1 1/2 months and they are only 6 inches tall. I know I really need to stick to the Group 3 w/viticella parents. suebot

I never even noticed that the prices are not posted - perhaps they will put in the prices when they update for 2011. I know how disappointing it is to not be able to find a variety that you really want. Let me know if you are successful in finding Emilia Plater. I do not think she will disappoint you.

Last spring when I bought EP from Hummingbird it was $16.99, as were all the other clematis I got there. Their plants arrived healthy and well-packed and thrived last summer. I would definitely buy from them again (and expect to when they get their list up for this year. I am kind of anxious to see what they have, and wish their schedule of posting their new list was more in keeping with other online clematis nurseries - my only complaint.) They have great customer service with prompt email responses.

Mercy, although it does not grow as tall, 'Prince Charles' is a very good substitute for 'Emilia Plater'. I have both varieties and have a bit of a preference for the blooms of PC ... both clems are real bloom machines!

pmermakov: Perhaps you can contact Hummingbird Farm via email and see if they will be adding those two again or if they can recommend another supplier. Can't hurt to ask. Just a thought.

Hi, I justed wanted to update everyone on my search for Emilia Plater. A member here on this forum very kindly offered to give me a piece of her Emilia Plater in exchange for some of my daylilies. I am so happy about the trade and can't wait until the weather warms up! Currently, we have about a foot of snow on the ground outside. Come spring quickly!!
