mums getting ready to bloom

My mums (country girl) are getting ready to bloom and I was curious to see if anyone lets them bloom and if they rebloom in the fall? I typically cut them back and do so about 4-5x a summer before fall arrives....

I've done it. It can delay the fall bloom if you cut them back hard. Just pinching mums slows them down a lot less.

the lady who gave me my first start of mums instructed me to keep them pinched back until the 4th of July. that way they will make the best fall showing.

So that is what I am doing. I trust her opinion as I have seen her garden and it is obviously the garden of a seasoned veteran. Mary

Boy that was quick. Here's the message I received from the grower: "Dear Kevin, Our grower says to give the mums a hard pinch-pinch the stems back at least half way not just picking off buds-then give the plants a big dose of commercially produced fertilizer such as miracle gro or Peters and that should break them of their premature budding. Sometimes shade or real cool night time temperatures can make them bud earlier as well. Hopefully this will help. Twyla Faribault Growers, Inc." So it looks like the really cool night temps we experienced this spring can trigger the bud formation. I've included a link to this grower. looks like inflos. you can protect your mangos by building pvc frames and covering with a thick clear plastic sheeting if there's a chance of frost, and if there's a hard freeze, add a string of Christmas lights or a heating lamp. you can search this forum for past posts about frost protection. not sure about Graham, but most NDM do bloom this time of year. mine started blooming about 2 weeks ago.

May I suggest, if you do put them in the trash, that you include something about there being nothing wrong with them? I think people are suspicious when something is in the garbage that looks perfectly fine. Suggestion: "Free. Absolutely nothing wrong with it." OR "Free. Healthy. Overstock." I like the idea of bring them to the mall. You just might meet some interesting or appreciative people. Wish I lived closer! LOL

mine almost always bloom twice. i let them bloom once, then trim back by 1/2 to 1/3 immediately afterwards for the fall bloom.

Mums are in that class of plants known as 'daylight determinate'. In other words they need a certain length of daylight to bloom. Here in 7,8,9 climate zones it is also warm enough for them to bloom during the necessary spring day length. Yes, let them bloom and then cut them back and fetilize. After the spring bloom is a good time to divide them, if needed. Just keep them well watered if you do.
