do I need to strip leaves off cuttings for winter?

Hi - I hacked up my brug last night and plan to put the "main" woody plant in the basement for dormancy, and the rest of the plant I cut into a bunch of pieces. I want to put them in a bucket for winter, and they'll be indoors. Do I need to strip the leaves? How often do you change the water? Thanks, Jeff

I always strip the leaves off my cuttings. It will grow new leavs when it is ready and less stressed.

Hopefully, you did not chop away below the "Y" on your mature plant, as it will take longer to develop new buds next year.

I would change the water every few days until you start to notice little white nubbies on the parts submerged. Then I would plant in potting soil, and put under lights. Others may disagree, but this is what I do, and it works for me.

The general rule is what jroot stated, but you didn't state what variety you have. Some will not root in the bucket of water method. If one chops below the 'Y' they will have to wait until the said plant 'Y s' again on the new growth and as jroot stated it takes longer. I agree once the nubbies are formed it's best to get them in dirt. There is a difference in the leaves from the inside/winter to the outside/summer growth so strip away this time of year!

I'm not the best at this but I'll try to help. The Maurelli if kept as a house plant should have had it's leaves left on but too late for that. It should live. The window is large and will provide enough light to keep it alive. It might start to look cranky by end of winter but it will be full height and ready to go in spring. If your garage will stay in the 45-50 degree range then you can cold store either/both in the garage. Many will cut the leaves like you have and pull them up for cold storage. If the roots go too dry the plant may die back. Last year I cleared all dirt and "repotted" them in pine bark. Kept in a 60 degree basement and wetted twice they came through with not too much wilting and dieback. At a colder temp I could have worried less about water and they would have had a better dormancy.

Thanks! I was out doing all sorts of other yard & garden work this afternoon, so went ahead and cut off the old leaves, or at least most of them. A couple that haven't had the old growth really come up yet (only an inch or so up yet), I still left the old leaves until the new gets going a little more. I cut off anything that looked like it was browning or bug-eaten.

If you could find some larger perenial Salvias at a nursery or even a big-box- store they would do well. It's been so long since I've been to any of these that I don't know what is even available. As was mentioned by another poster, Irises can get pretty ratty by August, and most don't rebloom, so you really need some filler like Salvias for the rest of the year. Reason I'm partial to Salvias is that some bloom all year here in CA 9 ...... coccinias being one example. Which reminds me that I have a beautiful blue Iris that has grown itself into a stump. Somehow I need to pry them apart and replant the Iris away from it's 'buddy'. 🙃
