sick coral aloe

My coral aloe is not doing well. I've had it where it gets direct sun until about 2:00 in the afternoon. It's leaves are trying to curl up. It gets some water but not a whole lot. We did have a week about a month ago where it rained every day. It is in a fast draining mix. Can anyone tell me how to make it happy?

More water! It looks very thirsty.

I would put in mostly shade, with maybe a bit of morning or very late afternoon sun, and if the soil is very dry, water it thoroughly 2-3x a week. Looks like it's dessicating

Your plant doesn't look bad to me. It just looks like it may be shedding a bottom leaf or two. Mine is 10-12 inches tall and hasn't started to lean yet, but it is outside all year long. It has shed a few of the bottom leaves, tho. No pups for me, yet. You can take a cutting to start a new plant. Let it callus, then pot it up for rooting. Don't water until roots develop. I haven't done this with Aloe ciliaris - yet - so hopefully someone will chime in with more specifics for you. Your soil looks pretty heavy to me. For the long term benefit of all the plants, I would amend the soil to at least 50/50 with perlite. There are many soil recipes on this forum, so a search will give you some options. Nice plants!

They usually are in the mix of 2" and 3" succulents you can buy at the big box stores for $3-$4 apiece. I like buying the very small ones because they are likely not to have mite infections. Also remember some sold lately as A. striata are hybrids, which can by identified by their marginal teeth--A. striata does not have marginal teeth. Saw a whole lot of the striata hybris yesterday at an Armstrong's, labeled as Aloe noblis(!)

Hi Joe, Have you tried Mission Hills Nursery? I was just there a couple of weeks ago. They have more succulents than I recalled. I got like 5-6 plants. Most were around $2 and I think I paid &5 or $6 for a pinkish red Lithops that just bloomed (whose name escapes me at the moment) and a H. Cooperii. I think I spent around $20 and they threw in a plastic nursery tray for free when I asked. More interesting than some of the other stores including Walter Andersen's and at a better price in my opinion. http://www.missionhillsnursery.com Good luck with your search. I know what it's like. Coral Aloe (Aloe striata) should do well in Phoenix. It did well for me in Tucson until an extremely severe freeze killed it. They prefer a bright shade, such as against the north side of a house, or under a tree. They can take some direct sunlight in the morning, if they are well-shaded from noon onward, and the low morning light coming through them from behind is particularly pretty. Yes, they need to be kept try. If you see black dots begin to appear in the leaves, it is a sign of too much water (internal rot), and may be too late to save. If in doubt, don't water. I water weekly at most in the dry heat of May and June, I skip watering if monsoons are good. I water alternate weeks in spring and fall, and never water in winter. One note, if the flowers came up as contorted curls, the plant has a virus, so discard them and plant some other unrelated plant in that spot. Don't forget the option of planting in a large pot (they get pretty big and heavy), to give you more location options. If potting, use a bagged cactus/palm soil, and follow the same watering regimen described above. It is a beautiful plant, so give it another go!

Mine withstands the same amount of sun, (full sun until around 3pm) but mine is in the ground. I don't water it at all it gets enough from rain but your potting soil might keep it a little too dry.

I live in central Texas west of 35, and I have mine in a pot in fast draining soil in mostly sunshine way into the afternoon, It gets water once a week, sometimes more, and it seems to be happy. I would say more water, but not less sun. My leaves have some rust color to them on the lower leaves. They are healthy and thick. It seems that your color says that it has not too much sun but too little water. Putting it in a slightly shadier spot till it recovers might be good. Question, do you have peat in your mixture? That might have dried out and is now not absorbing any of the moisture when you water it.

There isn't any peat in my mix. It seems to be a water problem. That's easy enough to remedy. My cholla has made me afraid to water succulents very much. It splits open when it gets too much water.

As you know, wantonamara, we've been having days of over 100 degree heat.

Not us yet mid 90's and finally starting to get less hummid. Good that there is no peat. Aloes are not cylindropuntias. They like some summer water.

I've been watering it daily since reading the helpful posts here and it looks much better. I'm starting to replace my clay pots with plastic.

It was 93 at 0530 this morning. I moved mine to a little afternoon shade and increased the water. It's much happier now. It was getting full sun all day & that just seemed a bit much for it. There is one in a bigger pot that is still in full sun and doing fine. I think the smaller one just dried out too fast. I only use clay or ceramic glazed pots myself. The plastic ones just don't hold up to the Texas sun and I got tired of picking up a pot, it breaking up and landing on my foot.
