Plant Delights Clematis Selections for Spring 2006

Have been meaning to post this for a few days and just keep forgetting to do so. Plant Delights, a nursery near Raleigh, has added a few new clematis to its spring offerings for this year. One of them, Clematis addisonii, is offered only via the web and not in the catalog presumably because Tony Avent doesn't have enough to justify putting it in the catalog. Unfortunately the one being offered is from seed collected from plants in Virginia and is not the dark blue-purple one that he has in his demonstration gardens and that I have posted pictures of in the past. Nonetheless, addisonii is one of the offerings which some might be interested in. Hold onto your pocketbooks before you look however, since most plants that Tony sells come at a high premium with most other suppliers of clematis. I ordered addisonii. This is the true species which is not easy to find!

Very true Carol. I just wish Tony would investigate tissue culture as a means of propagating that yummy dark blue/purple addisonii in his demonstration gardens. I would pay the premium that plant would command.

Don't forget that addisonii is fully herbaceous, and can therefore be split when a reasonable size! It's frightening the first time you do it, but once you realise how basically straightforward it is, then you are away! Just treat the splits, and the original (now slimmer) mother plant with TLC. Of course you need to persuade either your nurseryman of this, or but the plant and grow it on for a season or so first, though I do look at the roots of all 2 litre pot clematis that I buy in now as a matter of course before I pot them on anyway!

Keith, thanks for the info about splitting not only the integrifolias and heracleifolias but also those in the viorna family. The only thing is is that I would almost rather not split them due to the fear of loosing them than do it. Perhaps one day when I have more than one of a specific type, I will take the risk and try it! Until then, I fear I will treat it as an only child and not risk it. Just call me a chicken! LOL
