Full sun/part sun, etc. etc.

Although I have been gardening for years, I still wonder (especially now that we are in the South) how late in the day do you consider "full sun"? Let me re-word this: We have started cutting down more trees and some of our trees have grown - giving me more sun in some areas, less in others. I always thought that the sun's intensity was felt the most around noon - but if full sun is six hours (or more) then here in the South 4:00 is still really hot, even 5:00 - - can someone tell me what and how they consider the sun hours when dealing with full sun? I have a friend who considers any "light" part of that six hours - in that case - I have sun at 8 in the morning, but I don't count that. I usually consider at least 10 am (maybe 11 am) on - and that's why I am asking. Thanks so much for any replies - Carrie
