Re-classification of Yucca species

User

Doing some reading, I see that Yucca recurvifolia has been reclassified to be a variety of Yucca gloriosa (Yucca gloriosa var. tristis)--literally 'weeping Yucca'. This confused me because I thought 'recurvifola' was cold hardier than the rigid-leaved varieties. I thought this because the most commonly sold garden Yuccas in my area are Y. filimentosa and 'recurvifolia'. Actually, this is the first year I have seen a rigid variety of gloriosa even sold locally (Yucca gloriosa tricolor). (Don't you just love it when they change these botanical names around!).

Question: Any reason to expect this varietal difference to affect hardiness? (Flexible/weeping leaves handle snow load better, etc.?)

thanks in advance.
