suggestions for early bloomers

i have must have planted all mid-late bloomers in my garden in front. there are only 2 things in bloom-yellow lantana & a weeping redbud tree. what can i plant that will enjoy sun for next spring or the next early summer days?

I am in SC zone 8, but I will tell you what is blooming for me, or has been blooming for the past couple of weeks.
Verbena, blooms all summer
Gerber Daisies- all summer very easy to care for
Iris- Extremely easy, just water in hot weather when dry, my Iris bloom in Spring, then again fall when everything else is done.
Spyria- I have foundation plants, the bigger variety, blooms like crazy in early spring, just ending their first bloom now.
Panises- still blooming, reseeds in hot weather, blooms all winter, can't beat them! (LOL they are sooo easy)
Daffodils- done blooming by now, but I love them in March.
Cheap at all stores, reliable to bloom.
Good luck with your garden this year, be careful, it's addictive. LOL

My Jetfire quince will be blooming within a week here in NH. It is a short (4') variety with creamy white flowers. When not blooming it is best as a background plant as its structure is a bit like a bad hair day. Rhododendron mucronulatum and dauricum both bloom early. Lindera benzoin (Spicebush) is really early and has tiny yellow-green flowers and a nice scent. Cornus mas (Cornelian dogwood) has oodles of very small yellow flowers before forsythia. My spring witch hazels (Hamamelis x intermedia and H. vernalis) have both been blooming for at least 3 weeks now, maybe longer. I haven't been able to get a small Corylopsis to survive yet, though I will probably try again in a more sheltered spot than where I last tried.

Are you talking about cut flowers? Or blooms in the garden? Hmm, my first thought was salvia Victoria. Love, love, love this! But all my other thoughts (for annuals) seem to be short flowers, lol. Annual lobelia, heliotrope, ageratum, petunias (although these are usually more purple). Larkspur. Heavenly Blue morning glories might be beautiful. Whites - zinnias should bloom by July, no? And echinacea? Hydrangeas (both blue and white). Clematis. Annual geraniums. Foxgloves and irises? Or will they be done by then? Sorry, I'm not really giving solid ideas - can never remember when things bloom! I'm just throwing out random ideas which may or may not be helpful. Dahlias usually bloom much later for me when I plant the tubers, but I do see lots of them in bloom in the garden centers much earlier. Good luck! I made the same observation a while ago. If you have plants that are budding now, most likely you can cut them back and delay bloom by weeks or more. The author of the "Well Tended Garden" explains in great detail how to do it for many different plants. If you don't own it, go to good bookstore when it is 90 today, and buy it. Then stay where it is air conditioned and read it. It really is invaluable I'm not going to cut back the the first bloom of cone flowers, but I have pinched Autumn Joy back by a half, the phlox by a third, I hacked back a spirea I didn't get to before by half. That was two weeks ago and is completely covered with buds. You can cut back Joe Pye Weed by at least a third, all the helianthus, heleniums, almost anything with multiple branching stems. Really, get out the hedge clippers or use your thumb and forefinger and pinch away. Don't pinch back plants like veronicastrum candlelabra types. They'll grow back with multiple stems and lose their "real shape" hWhat else? Any mums and keep pinching till early July, boltonias, asters, monarda. Don't worry they won't all bloom at the same time. Different plants grow at different rates, so you'll still have a distribution of blooms over time. If this makes you nervous, just pick a few to cut back. Another interesting experiment is if you have multiples pinch back some alot, some less, and some not at all. You'll not only have a succession of color and bloom times for the same plant but you'll learn about the plants' growth habits. Another suggestion: get some annuals that come into their glory in late summer and fall: all those wonderful salvias, which are at their best in the fall. Not the little squatty ones, but Black and Blue, the tall scarlets- a hundred choices. You may not have an excuse to buy annuals like these again in the near future

Our Shasta daisies, Canterbury bells, and sweet Williams usually start blooming well about mid-June. But, I think they may be hard-pressed to be that early in Casper. You can buy these plants at a garden center. The annuals, snapdragons and calendulas should be going strong by the end of the month. Usually, the snaps available in the garden centers are low growing and the greenhouses have pushed them into bloom in May or even April. If you can find Rocket snaps, plant and pinch them in April, they may (MAY) regrow and bloom mid-June. Probably (PROBABLY), planting calendulas in a plastic tunnel and keeping them covered for the first month would push them into blooming in early June. Covering the Shasta daisies, if you already have them in your yard, should (SHOULD) encourage them to grow & bloom early. Don't forget all the hardy annuals that you can direct sow in late summer/early fall to bloom in spring. I have had good luck with these early spring cool season bloomers. Best for me are larkspur-never fails, poppies, hesperis, and sweet alyssum my books say spring sow, but fall for me, in the spring I hardly have time to breathe). These are all sow-in-place types and useful only to those with appropriate spaces for that use.
larkspur - always reseeds, blue seems to reseed mostly blue
love in a mist
baby blue eyes (beautiful but closes by noon)
five spot
poppies - CA, Shirley, opium
forget-me-nots
silene
clarkia
godetia
dames rocket (hesperis) - reseeds just right
batchelor buttons
sweet alyssum(esp the new large tetraploids) and all the beautiful plants by previous poster.
Bulbs and roots: the small alliums-uniflorum, roseum, cowanii- and anemone nemrosa,geranium tuberosum, dicentras, (exsc spelling please). Also don't the dutch iris and glad.Bz. bloom in the down time between e spring and e summer? The LA lilies also very early.
And viola Columbine,the v. odorate varieties.,astillbes, aquillegias, dianthus, May Queen daisy, salvia Blue and White hill and May Night, achillea Anthea, candytuft. small veronicas. And the early shrubs - Quince, pearl bush, small roses, beautybush, deutzias, lilac.
