BK, I agree, I like the 'finished' look of pot feet, and I do use them with my decorative patio pots, which sit on concrete or decking rather than on the ground. The link is to the thread I had in mind. It's all you ever wanted to know about the movement of water through potting media. It seemed counter-intuitive to me that raising a pot off the ground doesn't improve drainage, but that's the idea here. Basically, a rough summary is that every media has a level at which gravity alone is no longer sufficient to draw water down through it. This is called the perched water level. (Do forgive me if you already know all this...it was news to me when I started out a few years ago!) When a pot is raised off the ground, the water drains out only to that "perched" level, then it just hangs out there. Not a problem if your media is well drained (has a low perched water level), but potentially rot-inducing if your media is finer (water perches at a higher level in the pot and keeps the roots and crown wetter, longer). When the potting media is in contact with the earth, that perched water can continue to wick downwards and out. The soil acts as a sponge or a wick. Now, as someone with verrrry slow-draining clay soil, I do wonder about how different soil types effect this process. But anyway, that's kind of the Readers Digest version. What do you think? Third year grower here: First, NW Ohio??? Anywhere near Bryan. My Mom is from there...still have some relatives there too. Now, about the peppers: 1. The 5-1-1 is as cjohansen says. The only thing I would add is that the 1 part of Peat can be most any normal growing medium from peat to garden soil to top soil. But peat is a very common choice. The 5 is pine or fir bark and it must be relatively free of other debris such as wood or other contaminates. It should also be in chunks between 1/8" and 1/2" in size. there are also some other ingriedents recommended such as a slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote and then some pelletized lime as well. There are some variations out there to that recipe, but that is pretty much the standard. 2: The CFL's or tube florescent lights used for growing peppers are normally best in the upper spectrum from 5000K to 6500K and are usually marketed as "Daylight". That is considered to be the spectrum best suited for growing peppers. 3: It is tough to answer this with a definitive answer as we don't know the size of your plants or the size of the pots they are currently in. Some photos would be a great help. But in general, if they are becoming rootbound with roots sticking out of the drainage holes they are ready for a bigger pot. Some people use a rule that if the pot they are in can be placed over the top part of the plant, they are still OK in that size pot. Although most of my citrus is in the ground I am using 20 inch pots from Costco for my kiwis, raspberry, blueberries and blackberry. My wife likes the look of them so they work well. I wouldn't want to move them inside for the winter though.
