I have a lot of baptisias in sun and a fair amount of shade (tho they much prefer sun). I have moved some and previous posters are right, they have a *very* deep root system. But the good news is that indeed they can be moved with enough muscle power. Here in Mass., I like to move things in the spring so they can make root growth before winter. Fall transplanting of anything has not been a big success here. It's still early enough so that, once it's done blooming, cut it back hard and move it. Then water, water, water til fall. A happy baptisia should not flop, unless it's newly transplanted or very young. I do lop off 12"-18" after bloom as they shade out their neighbors, my fault for planting close. But this is one of the great perennials, IMHO. No pests or diseases, great flowers and foliage, no staking.

It may grow past the damage. Or it may not. I personally would eat the fruit they produce--others may have a different opinion--but the badly damaged ones may not produce fruit or only produce a small amount, and it may be stunted. The brown spot on the tomato in the first picture looks like damage from rubbing against the cage. Such damage is no big deal unless a mold or something takes the opportunity to start rotting the fruit or it attracts the attention of a pest. EDIT: For future, maybe you can put your plants somewhere else on your property. If not, maybe you can talk to your neighbor and come to some kind of agreement or you can offer to pull his weeds by hand/hire a neighborhood kid to pull his weeds by hand or something, depending on what problem he's trying to solve.

NHBabs z4b-5a NH so glad to learn that about your acidic soil working out just fine with Baptisia- because I'm getting ready to transplant one I just planted this spring that became shaded by a butterfly bush and I was concerned about the soil in the area I'm thinking about planting it if I get enough sun there. I trust an actual gardeners experience such as yourself-thanks for the info! Oh and also I keep reading that because the tap root wants to grow 10 feet down, it will not bloom in a pot- but this little plant I recently bought was blooming in a pot when I got it in the mail. So I'm wondering if they can be container grown...I mean a small tree needs a long tap, but grows and survies in a big pot, and is reduced in size- right? Any input on this would be interesting to anyone growing Baptisia I'm sure. (Only reason I'm considering a pot is becuase I've run out of sun and the pot could be in a cemented area with sun.)
