Inspired by Josh, a new succulent fountain

I was inspired by Josh (in my other post), I went ahead and created a succulent fountain, making use of Josh's idea of "cascading plants".

Verily, your cup runneth over! ;)

This is going to look wonderful as the top colors, and spills down to
meet the various hues reflecting back up from the bottom! I can't wait!
I hope you'll provide monthly updates as you have your other succulent bed.

Lovely collection, Mike! Your photos are inspiring! Josh is correct... I'd like to concur... house interiors tend to be very dry, especially during fall and winter. Take into consideration your heating and cooling sources, your climate, the season, and the location of your windows and how much sun enters. My own indoor environment tends to be very dry all year... the air conditioning sucks the moisture right out of the air, and our heating unit does the same. The main area for my plants is an east facing window with lots of bright, morning sun. I've tried hard to grow various orchid varieties, but the air is just too dry. Without spending money on a humidifier, which I can't afford, I'm relegated to growing what my environment will support. Orchids are not out of the question... I just have to stick with the types that don't mind a little dry air. Phals and Dens do well. Other types that require more humidity do not. Cacti, succulents, and other plants that can tolerate drier air are what I stick with. Spider mites love dry environments with dry air, so they're always something to keep your eyes open for. Usually, by the time you notice them, you have a fair infestation going on. When I'm watering, I take the opportunity to look for the fine webbing associated with these pests. Even though my environment is rather dry, I'd never go back to the days of compacted, peaty soils. The gritty mixes are so much healthier for the roots of my plants, and healthy roots promote happy plants. I like having total control over the moisture amount and the fertilizing. It does take a bit of getting used to at first... but once you find a watering and feeding schedule... and I use that word loosely... it all comes together beautifully.

Hey everyone.. I wish I could of got a couple of better shots than that, but I think you all get the point. Josh, thanks pal! I do love the looks of the mix. I can tell you that anytime I ever transplant out of this mix, the roots to my plants always look clean and bright white. For anyone that thinks a mix like this might dry out too fast, not so. It does dry out a bit faster than most mixes with peat, but I have also learned that watering my plants more frequently happens to encourage better growth as a whole. What I did notice too was that once water touches the bark, immediately it starts to decompose as anything would, which doesn't require as much frequent watering as I first started out with. In fact, here is what the mix looks like after sitting in just two days of water. But, it does break down a lot slower than a mix with small fine particles and dries out so evenly. The key is to soak it first before use. Greendale, for me this mix is just as good as the gritty one because I am not using any peat fraction at all. The Pumice and Perlite do not breakdown at all while the bark breaks down just as slow as the one I use in the gritty. What I like about it is, it is much lighter than the gritty, although the gritty certainly has its place in my world. Happy New Year to you all...Josh, Purple and Greendale! Dave, I'm sure the Society would like you as a member and a vendor - there's certainly a place for someone selling succulent-garden starter plants that are grown well and bug-free. It's interesting that you also are growing Cistanthe guadalupensis - that's a great plant for the SouCal growing area and is underrepresented in San Diego gardens (Bonus! - Cistanthe-member plants are commonly known as 'pussypaws'). Coincidentally enough, there was a show last night on folks who dive with sharks - one of the best places to see great white sharks is off Guadalupe Island, which is where C.g. comes from (it and a few islets). They were diving from a boat, so my posting here is coming full-circle with your most-recent picture. Speaking of pictures, if you're judiciously posting off-topic pics (and large ones at that), you might want to put just a thumbnail up in the post, rather than the whole picture. Some folks here are on dial-up.

Your Meyer will not do well in a pot that size. By nature they are an 8x8' bush, round and very full with criss-crossing branches, extremely vigorous. For consumer purposes they graft them onto dwarf rootstock that is usually 2-3' tall. At the ten year mark that Meyer if in-ground would be at least 6' high and far wider/deeper. The pot you have it in would be suitable for a gardenia bush, but it is way too small for the Meyer. I'm not saying that you can't keep a Meyer in a pot, I merely don't understand why you would be trying to keep it miniaturized. There are better evergreen mini-shrubs that would be just fine in such a container size, whereas you are more likely to kill the Meyer trying to force it to stay houseplant-sized. That simply isn't natural for a Meyer, which is bred to be highly productive and is one of the hungriest shrubs existent. A half-barrel is the minimum size container to use with a Meyer. If you don't want the lemons, then use another shrub and buy the Meyers at the grocery store. In CA a lot of stores carry them. If you have friends who live in the EBay they are happy to give them away - virtually everyone in the EBay lives within 50' of a citrus tree of some sort, because this was all citrus orchard farms at one time! Success with gardening depends a lot on listening to the plants and using the right plants for your site and conditions. Sometimes you can force plants to do what you want, but it's never easy and seldom successful.

Yes, it's from the Bible, but I think he's meaning both in a figurative sense (you have lovely plants there, and your cup running over means something much in plenty) and in a literal sense - the centerpiece could be a mug, tankard, goblet or a plain cup, but it's 'running over' with the stems of the Sedum.

Surely I will update for I think planting is interesting but keeping the plants grow is even more interesting.

I love it! In fact, I have a little birdbath in my flowerbed that is too shallow to be practical. I think I'll drill some holes in it and plant it like yours next year. So between now and then, I'll have to find some pretty, tall planter for the upper tier. Thanks for your inspriation!

Hi, Xuan! Yes, it was definitely a compliment!
I'm sorry if it came across as a bit cryptic...! If you want to know,
it was either the "cup runneth over" reference or the "Whom does
the Graal Serve?" reference that I was going to use ;)

This looks like a table set for the succulent gods,
replete with a Chalice everflowing.
I imagine the sedum as grape-clusters ;)

very nice Xuan!! I cant wait to see once the "burrito" is larger with longer pieces! I have been wanting one of those forever and cant find them around here, so Ive just been taking the more "rounded" pieces of my donkey tail and propogating those. As that one grows, I take an even more rounded piece from it. Seems to be working, but finding one would be much easier! ! lol. Very very nice!
