pitcher I.D.

was wondering if anyone could I.D. this pitcher plant for me. it says on the thing that i brought it in that it is in the Sarracenia family, and it is called a trumpet pitcher plant, but all i can seem to find on google is yellow trumpet pitcher plant.

i just want to know exactly which one it is so i can get info on how to care for it, and so on.

aslo, i wanted to know if i should re-pot it because the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot as you will be able to tell from these photo's. also this thing drinks like a fish!!!

This is the first time I read someone complain about their beautiful plant growing very well & acquiring healthy normal maroon colors typical for a Sarracenia purpurea. When many people, especially newbies struggle keeping their plants alive, much less having them acquire their colors. The reason the pitcher plant you have is named scientifically "Sarracenia purpurea", is because it's pitcher leaves are either dark maroon or purple, hence why the latter scientific name "purpurea" is Latin for purple. Same reason it is commonly knowing as "purple pitcher plant". So when a purple pitcher plant is growing normally under healthy levels of light. The new pitcher's it sprouts will be green with purple veins, but as the leaf gets older, the vein will began to flush or blush & pretty soon the whole leaf with become purple. That's normal for the plant, the older the leaf the darker it will become. Already I can see some of the new green pitchers blushing, on their way to become maroon colored. Cold temperatures will give it a dark maroon color but mostly happens when the leaves get older during its growing season. The reasons for acquiring that dark maroon or red colors (depending on the variety) is part of the luring mechanism to attract its prey insects. The colors contrasts the trap against the normal green background from the rest of the vegetation. It may be imitate be imitating a flower, plus the sugary secretion it produces. Sure it also depends on the variety of Sarracenia Purpurea, usually the 'Montana' variety, doesn't blush much and it's leaves are normally green with dark veins, but it is harder to grow because it prefers colder climate, maybe you will have a chance since you already live in an area with a colder climate. But your type is obviously the the variety that turns all red as the leaves get older, a popular variety sold everywhere. So if you want greener lives, give it less light. You have to find a balance, otherwise you're going to end up with long spindly limp plants. So, if you follow JungleMel's advice, you will have darker colored pitchers. Even new developing leaves will be sprouting red colored.

Hi A fine soil mix is 50/50 Peat/Perlite, they also like Orchid Bark mixed in Ive read. Ok, since its a hanging pot you have, this should have drainige holes, like LG said, they like to be constantly moist but not soaked. So if you water it and the hanging pot allows for the water to drain out and away (drop down) the soil should remain fine, you should not let the soil dry out completly though. With the pitchers, let let dry out and then cut them off once dried. With your shriveled pitchers, this is what happend to my plant. Why?, I found that when I filled the water tray with Perlite so that the pot was not sitting in water constantly this STOPPED straight away. I see it looks like the hanging pot does have a water tray now that I look at the pics. You can either remove it (if it can) or fill the tray with perlite. I think this is why your pitchers are not forming completly. Ok, next up you want shaded bright light, no direct hot sunlight. These plants get shaded light in the wild from the tree canopies above, so you can hang it in a location that gets the same kind of light. Next up, you can repot it in a bigger pot if you really want to, but I think your plant still looks fine for the moment. Hope this helps!! Cheers Sheldon

I have the same pitcher - can't remember exactly what I paid for it since it was 3 or 4 years ago and bought several at that time. I generally won't pay as much as you did - not that the piece isn't worth that but because I'm cheap about things like that! You may - MAY - have paid over the value but so what? You certainly didn't spend a fortune and you didn't buy it for an investment, you want it for it's decorative value (and maybe you'll use it, too) and because it makes you smile. What else matters?

Oldbat, My training is in the lab. I have all manner of Pyrex dishes including glass bowls that look like crucibles and beakers. I am trying to find a use for Burettes and volumetric flasks this week:-). I like Pyrex because they are inert and are dishwasher safe so if I make a drink with orange peel in it like my Hibiscus tea, you won’t smell it next week when I use it for chilled water. They also lay on their sides without spilling in the fridge. The Takeyas lay on their sides but I get some spillage with them. I also like the wider mouths on the Pyrex, not wide enough to put lemons in, but it makes it easy to pour. I have this unit from Blomus (Blomus Water Carafe) which I use next to my bed but the top is open and it is more decorative rather than the types of function you are looking for. Good luck!

Yeah, both of those hybrids are very similar looking.

In any case, you can repot it, but wait until next spring after it comes out of dormancy. If you repot now just before it goes dormant it might not have time to reestablish itself and that stress will just carry through dormancy, making it more likely to lose the plant.

Sarracenias prefer a water tray with up to half the pot in standing water.

In any event, all Sarracenias can be cared for similarly, all require winter dormancy in a cold place (in pots keep them at around 40-50 degrees all winter and do not let them freeze completely as pots are not as insulating as the ground they normally grow in) and short photoperiod during winter, all like a lot of water (mineral free distilled, reverse osmosis, or fresh rain water only), and all prefer the same medium for growing... sphagnum peat moss with sand or perlite in a 50/50 mix. In the growing season all Sarracenias prefer full sunlight outside, like garden plants. Never fertilize the plant (adding fertilizer can harm or kill your plant), it will catch insects for its fertilizer. It is possible to foliar feed with very diluted fertilizers, but it is not needed at all (more is not better in this case).

It is without a doubt a judith hindle hybrid.
I have both and the dana's delight has darker red and thinner pitchers.
Where did you get it?
Pretty nice looking specimen.

i got it from a place called bunnings, which is (from what i have gathered) sort of the same as home depot there in the states.

i already have the pot standing in a slightly larger pot with water in it. but it can drink that amount of water, if not more, easily in a day.

i have really been wanting to re-pot this and see it boom, but i will take your advice and wait untill it is coming out of dormancy.

there was a fly in one of the pitchers that was too big to go all the way down to the digestive fluid, and was just stuck inside but not in the juices, and it started to make that particular part of the pitcher go brown. i poked it down with a stick so it could digest it, did i do the right thing?
