If the dark spots come off when you gently scrape them with a finger nail they are most likely scale. If they are old they will feel dry and come off rather easily. If they are new they can be squishy and moist and might want to stick to the branch a little more. They can be dark black, brownish, tannish, reddish, etc - a wide variety of colors. They can blend in *very* well so make sure you check the branches, trunk, and leaves carefully (under sides as well, particularly at the petioles and on new growth). I had never heard of scale before when I had a tree that was in decline... I found some closeups online and then carefully checked all over the tree and found it to be heavily infested. You don't notice them if you don't know what to look for. I picked off / washed off several hundred of them and the tree bounced back. In that case though the leaves were yellowing before dropping. Scale doesn't usually cause green healthy looking leaves to drop. However it is a problem on indoor container citrus so do check and try to control them. I didn't have great luck with oils alone to control scale. I think the oils kill the babies that are crawling around before they settle down but the scale itself has a protective layer (that's the part you see) so I generally had to scrape all of those off, then spray, then spray again a few weeks later. After that I had a few months without any noticeable scale. I still think mites are your problem and will probably be controlled with the spray. Oh and one more thing just in case - the first few times I picked off scale I would just kind of flick it on the ground because it was gross and because I didn't think they could move once they had built up their protective shells. Later I read that ants will "harvest" the scale by moving them around and then eating the sticky stuff they leave behind - sure enough the ants were picking up the scale I would flick on the floor and putting them back on the tree - I saw them going up and down the trunk until I sprayed. Gross. In other words - dispose of the scale properly and out of reach of any ants.

Do add to fofoca's great advice, "Be careful not to overwater while it's recovering" which was an awsome point, please don't miss it.. Then, to see the roots recover quickly, make sure when you pot it, to put in an open, loose, airy well draining soiless mix. The looser the soil, and the faster draining it is, the more likely you will avoid future root rot problems and let your roots breathe as soon as possible. Good air exchange and quicker drying out of mix, if you do so..Your roots will thank you for it! You want your soiless mix to dry out at least every couple of days. For some here, that is still to long to wait..For some, to much of a hassel to HAVE to water so frequently. Your plants will LOVE you for this too..lol Remember, the first most important thing is, the soiless mix you'll be using, then everything will follow to your benefit..:-) Happy growing and I hope everything goes well..

tsmith2579, There is no draft our pellet stove blower is blowing in a different direction. The plastic pot has the drip pan attached on the bottom so if there is a little excess water that's where it goes and it probably does sit there until it evaporates. I do have it in the sunniest part of the house with 2 plant lights on them. Are the halogen shop lamp better than the plant lights? Are plastic pots ok to plant orange trees in? Right now I have them planted in potting soil and a little peat moss,and I am in the process of transplanting them into more drainable soil because I don't know what else to try because of leaves and baby fruit falling off. Any other suggestions?

Try using a magnifiying glass to examine it to see what's happening. Then if it is "bugs" you can cover with a plastic bag and spray it. Good Luck!
