Uh oh! It's getting cold tonight!

Yikes! The weatherman is saying it is going down to 40 tonight (4 degrees Celsius) Do I need to take Brugs inside. I'm worried about moving them because two of them are chocked full of buds. (haven't had any blooms yet this year) Will it hurt/stress the plants if I move them inside if I have to?

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as there's no frost you should be alright. Where are you that it's getting so cold already?

I live about an hour from Toronto. It doesn't usually get this cool, this early. Last week we had a couple of days that were close to 90, this week we're hardly making 70 during the day.

The plants are right beside the house, under an eave, so I thought it might be okay, I just don't want to mess up after babying these things all summer.

So, as long as it stays above frost temperatures, they'll be okay outside?

Frank, You appear to be pruning to reduce fruit load in order to avoid branches breaking. There is an easier, and much more tree friendly approach. Instead of pruning branches off, start stripping fruit off. This is called fruit thinning, and is a normal practice for commercial and home orchards. Basically, start taking off fruit until there is at least 10 inches of space between each fruit. There are numerous benefits to doing this, not the least of which is salvaging your tree. After thinning, if your branches still look susceptible to breaking, take off more fruit. Don't bother with treating your pruning cuts. You may feel empathy to apply a "dressing" to your tree wound, but trees aren't like people. Think of them more like grass. You would never apply a wound coating to your freshly mown lawn. Tree dressings can actually hinder healing, by providing a moist media for fungus and bacterial to grow. Only time will tell if your tree will succumb to fireblight, but excessive pruning certainly increases the risk. However, if you haven't seen fireblight yet, then I wouldn't too worried about it. The pathogen must be present in your area, for the trees to contract it.

Yes, we have gotten some frozen "stuff" that is laying thinly on the roof and porch and creating a very thin icy shell on the outside of jugs, but the earth shows no signs of frost. I ended up not covering anything. We'll see what happened. I had just put squash in the ground, and that was my main concern. I figured that if it freezes I still have plenty of time to start more. Since the other true frosts didn't kill anything I wanted to experiment and let this night take its course. It will only warm a little today and remain overcast, so based on today's finding I might be more careful tonight. I still don't understand why you all insisted on taking all of our snow this past winter. So very inconsiderate of you all. I think we got snow about once a month. But, at this exact time, I'm not minding that you hogged all the cold stuff!

Hi Flower Power, I have one planted vertically but only for cuttings. It is only in a 4 inch pot but will go into the garden today as it is well over a foot tall. I think your 6 inch pot will be way too small, unless you are just starting it there until planting in a larger space. I intend to get that vertical tuber into the ground however it will fit to best accommodate the plant growth. They aren't that smart that they know direction, are they? One point for horizontal planting is that the ground would be warmer near the surface, cooler down vertically. So perhaps that's why horizontal planting is recommended. Plus, sometimes when you dig up clumps there are many new tubers formed and some of them are forced to go vertical for lack of horizontal space. Tym, As Pirate Girl said, you're too concerned about watering these. They'll be fine. They are drawing resources from their lower leaves in order to live, but this takes months. As the resources are depleted, the lower leaves dry up. You can remove or not. This is a natural process, especially when they're in growth - as new growth appears, old growth dies. As you note, until there are roots there is no reason to water them. The only condition where you would is one you can't supply right now - lots of sun and warmth, a broad expanse of sidewalk or a heating mat, and the plant sitting in pure pumice in a pot that will warm easily. Until you have those conditions when an Aloe is rootless, watering is fruitless - or rather it's worse than fruitless, because it will kill the plant. Just be kickin' it with the Aloe - stand it up in a nice sturdy vase/container (a 155mm shell casing works great), or leave it potted in dry soil, and spritz as needed. It will be fine until growing time. I hope this has convinced you, because frankly I'm out of words.

I find that my brugs do better in the cooler weather. Blooms last longer and they look quite happy. We often get really cool nights even in the middle of summer (such as we had NOT this year). As long as they don't freeze...

Yeah, I have definitely noticed that mine started doing better after the hot summer weather cooled off a bit. But I haven't hit autumn before with Brugs, and I'll be darned if I'm going to kill them now!

I agree that they should be okay in the 40's. They usually enjoy the cooler nights. Look out there and see if they have thier leaves raised up. Mine will usually do that and look all happy once it starts cooling off.
You're lucky, I've been dreaming of fall weather for a few weeks now..I'm dying to walk in the cool crisp autumn air, see pretty leaves, and smell woodsmoke! Ok I'm torturing myself again LOL!

Brugs are actually supposed to handle down into 29-30 degrees farenheit. But since the forecasts can be unpredictable, better safe than sorry- better to make sure the are safe. 40 degrees is fine.

Oh, believe me, I'll definitely take pictures when I actually get blooms. Holy cow, the buds get pretty big before they pop. I've been thinking for a week now that they must be as big as they can get, but NO.
Thanks for the input, I'll be a little more restful tonight!
I'll post pictures of my NOIDs as soon as they finally pop.

Warren, mine will not come in until almost Thanksgiving here in Burlington. They are in the ground and I can't dig them up fast and for a sudden single nights drop in temps. if there is no frost thy will do fine. If you are really retentive, drop a light sheet/blanket/newspaper over them if it makes you feel better but do not use plastic, it has no insulation value.
