I add a few drops of Superthrive and B1 to the rooting water. I use diluted hydrogen peroxide (10 parts water : 1 part H2O2) in a spray bottle for growing seeds and small cuttings (not brugs). I spray the surface of the soil to help keep fungus in check.

Karen? Can I "spray" the water or should I just change it if I see my B-O-B getting weird? I wouldn't want to disturbe all those roots if I didn't have to, that's why I'm asking.

Even with using the aerators I did change the water about every 6 weeks. You aren't going to hurt the roots and if any break more will grow. I wouldn't worry about that. You only need about 5" of water in the rooting buckets.

I use it on my hard to root ones. Some of them just will not grow, I have not killed them yet. I have put a cap into a half/gallon. Thrown in rootone hormone, and used a bayer 3 in one fungicide.

probably should have pulled them out and gone to soil and rootone. If they do not root in a month it is better to go to soil (dixi cups). A lot of cuttings and one goes bad will contaminate your water. check each daily for rot until you get used to the water way. A really good cutting will be rooting in a week. I might try a vermiculite rooter to see how it works. I love the stuff and plants love to put out roots in it. That way I do not have to change water. I am always looking for a better way. I was never the kid who could leave things alone. It just hurts to bad. Lol as I get older I have to accept things that are functioning properly.

Jim: Re - Your warning about the water being too warm.

I'll keep an eye on that. I was just concerned so I bought a heater. I'm on a slab, and that tub will be near an outside wall on the floor here in the kitchen for a while. So wanted to make sure the water didn't get too cold to help root. I'll leave it at the lowest setting then.

Question:

I have one white that suffered a terrible injury months ago. No idea what caused it - stem, about 1" diameter, had split. I thought it was a bug, or a bird, or it got "bent" hard and snapped back.

I put a "tourniquet" on it with green garden tape - strapped it back together - seems to be fine - other than crabby about blooming. Matter of fact, it's the only white blooming.

Should I even risk putting this white into the BOB with the new ones? Or keep it seperate?

What you did was akin to grafting and as long as the graft has healed it should be fine. I have my rooting buckets directly on the floor near a window and I don't bother heating the water. I agree with Jim, if it hasn't started rooting in 3 to 4 weeks I move it out of the bucket. Unless it's a variety I really want I usually just trash it, otherwise I'll try it in soil.

Ok - then I won't worry about it. I'll just cut above the bulge on it and go from there. May be the only one that gets chopped down to 1 foot.

Gloria - how is your B-O-B doing? I think I've got little nubbies on some of the cuttings I received.

And it may be my imagination, but I think the rooted items I received are actually getting MORE hairy roots. . .that or they need a shave. (grin)

Couldn't make the duct tape work - long story of uncoordinated silliness.

So I did what someone else suggested - one of those wire baskets that you hang under a shelf. Turned it upside down and stuck the cuttings through the "squares." The brackets hold it up over the bubbling rods - and it's short enough to hold even the 5" cuttings. It's rubber coated, so it won't rust.

Counted the squares - yep - 96+ - room enough to have LOTS of cozy cuttings! Of course - I loved the look on someone's face when he did the math - over 96? You plan to have that many? And you're going to PLANT 96? (grin)

How is yours going?

The basket sounds like a good idea but are the holes big enough to lift the cuttings without damaging the roots when you are ready to plant them? I'm asking because I'm lazy (and pressed for space) and leave my cuttings in the bucket for months. By the time I take them out it's a crazy tangle of roots in the bottom of the bucket.

I was wondering the same thing...

If anyone was wondering about the duct tape I use it to section off my rooting buckets. I put the tape in a criss cross pattern over the top of the bucket so each cutting has a "space". This helps hold them upright and keeps them sort of separated. I just pull off the tape when I'm ready to remove the cuttings.

Well Karyn - now that you pointed that out - I discovered THAT this morning. (grin) One of them too big to come through - so it got an outside slot. (grin) The squares are 1" x 1".

So - in an effort not to make a fool of myself again with the duct tape - I realized. . .DUH. . I can pull the wire basket UP - ok. .yea. .they all fall - but they're all marked with sharpie on the stem - and I can plunk them in the ground. Most of the roots are flexible enough to slip through.

Otherwise, to change the water - just lift and dump. Checking for slimey roots may be challenging. . .but. . .you didn't see me with the duct tape. . now THAT was challenging. That earned me a grin and a shaking of the head as he walked away.

I'm trying to figure out why you had a hard time with the tape? I just take strips and put them across the top going in one direction then turn and put them in the other direction to make little squares or diamonds. I stick the tape to the sides of the bucket.

Karen - some of the cuttings are only 5 inches tall, and the others kept slipping down and sliding through. (very skinny)

So, when you try to reach down to get one and pick it up, the others were falling, and then the tape is stuck to your arm, then to the cutting etc., etc. This sounding like a bad "I Love Lucy" episode? (grin)

So - I have a small wire basket in there. (until I can figure something else out.)

I've got a couple that are trying to sprout leaves - and I seem to recall - I think we were told not to have leaves because you don't want the cutting trying to support the leaves, right?

I'm picturing you frantically trying to keep cuttings above water with tape stuck all over your arms. lol I use a separate bucket for small cuttings. I usually like to take long cuttings. I had told someone that requested cuttings last year that they were long before I sent them. When they got them (in perfect condition) this person complained that they were too big and they had to cut them each into several pieces. Where's the problem in that??? It's not like the shipping was any higher. I swear, some people are just never satisified! I trim off all the big leaves and buds when I take the cuttings but leave any new growth that develops while they are rooting. I don't know if there's a reason that new growth should be removed but I haven't had any problems.

It was SO annoying. Had it all ready with the tall rooted cuttings - and then cuttings arrived from another shipper. They're 5 and 6" tall. Said "sonova!" now what? Slipped them in - PLUNK! - d***it! - reached in. . . plunk goes another - my arm hair stuck to the tape, hold another up - leaves of a tall one got stuck - more swearing. . .ripped ALL the duct tape off into a wadded ball on the floor and stomped around the house looking for extra shelving. None. I don't have any more pea gravel, so plastic cups weren't going to work. Walking around seeking an idea, stumbled on this wire basket . . .said HEY! This'llwerk!

So just did THIS for now.

Hi Dweb: Awaiting arrival of a few more cuttings. So far only L'Amour in bucket. I am using Chop Sticks to keep the cuttings (green) off the bottom. I also made a grid across the top of the container with duct tape to keep them from touching each other. Last year I especially found the narrow very young cuttings I rec'd rotted when touching. So this time I'm trying not to lose any. My Adora is in a holed plastic cup filled with stones and in the bubbler. She is not doing well. This Brug seems Never to have had a Happy Moment and she was a nice healthy-looking plant from CG! Will keep you posted on next batch of cuttings as they come. Gloria

Oh boy, they rot if they're touching?

Only under the water they're touching. (roots) I have tags on most - and wrote with a sharpie on the fat ones. Tags floating in the water on the shorter green ones. Grrr. . .

Some are one inch in diameter, some are only pinky thickness. The double Orange HGs.(and boy they're green. I'm really keeping an eye on those - I chased those!)

Very excited about the Angels Moonlight. It's another German one.

Guess I better move those apart. They're actually being held apart by the 1" squares on the basket. I'll keep an eye on that. Still wanted to add some rootone to the water, but thought better of it after the first mess I made.

My cuttings are fairly well separated in the bucket but the roots become pretty tangled. Someone sent me tiny green cuttings from their NOID dbl orange last year. I was sure that they would rot due to their size. They were less then the diameter of a pencil and only about 4 inches tall. They actually did quite well and are now a couple feet tall. No blooms yet though. I'm hoping for flowers next year. I'll probably keep them growing under lights over the winter.

Hey Dweeb: OK. Just finished doing my imitation of you and the tape biz! My taping grid was doing just fine UNTIL I received some cuttings from e-bay and they are soooo short that they keep falling over and floating! Tied them to the chop sticks to give some length, but then they didn't reach the water (like I couldn't see that coming?) So then I shifted into "The Dweeb Taping Gear" and tried to tape them to the sides of the "bucket". Even the Great Dane cocked his head to one side trying to figure out what his Alpha person was trying to do!!! Tape, water, Brugs everything all over everything!!! Gave it up, walked away to have a cuppa. Meanwhile the %#*& cuttings are floating around in the bubbles. Oh, BTW, one of the bubble stones has quit making bubbles ... it never made as many as the other "stone" so will now have to get another one. Right now, I AM VEXED!!! (but I'll get over it, soon. :0) I guess my bucket had gone together too easily!! Gloria

Why don't you just use a small jar or bucket for the shorties? Gloria do you have the stones on a splitter from 1 pump? If so that might be why you aren't getting any action from one stone. Unless you have a fairly strong pump or a pump with multiple attachments the splitters don't work well. I've had more aquariums then I can count over the years so I have a number of extra pumps and use 1 pump per stone. It does get to be a mess with all the electrical cords and tubing running across the floor.

I have one tube that's LEAKING going blblblblblblb at the connection. I've shoved it into the other bubble wall - but it's leaking out. Both bubble stones work, just more bubbles at one end. Grrrrrr. . . .maybe the tube was supposed to fit on the OUTSIDE. . .well, next time I change the water, I'll see if I can put it together better.

Ok, ladies I did not want to chirp in about the 5.00 pump. You need to use a larger one. It will power a bunch of stones and splitter will work with it. They also make a $ 2.00 regulator that is adjustable with a screw. Now duct tape, I saw that coming.ROFL Small buckets( make sure they have handles) and aquarium gravel work pretty good.(RINSE 1ST) It makes it real easy to take it to the tub for a cleanup. How to manage those little ones????? Not an easy question. I just rest them against the wall of the bucket. Maybe a piece of Styrofoam with holes and you can float them. Keep them close and a piece of support rubber tape to keep them there in position. The small ones will want to bend on you so Styrofoam floater will solve this. PS do not try anything metal in the water unless it is stainless steel. Also if they are on the floor a small ice chest is good to sit on unless you like flat knees. I have been there and done that so please do not mind if I have a little laugh.

My little pump actually does pretty well. It's an Elite/99 (799 model) But if I continue to accumulate - as you said - I'll get a bigger one. (grin) Maybe drive multiple buckets!

Checking the cuttings today - couple on the bottom are getting like "wet wood" - not rotting per se, but splitting a little. Going to keep a VERY close eye on those. They will get evacuated immediately if they deteriorate further.

Will also get some more small clear plastic cups for the wee ones to sit in. I think you are both so right about the $7.00 Wal-Mart pump not doing it. I have it connected to a tee to run 2 tubes for the pair of "stones." Will get another pump and see what happens. But I must say, some of the cuttings folks on E-bay are sending out are so pencil thin or even thinner, and green that those are the ones I have a difficult time rooting. Feeling calmer, now. LOL. Thanks for the advice.
