Have you kept them damp at all times during that week? More top soil would be good....also keep them damp...you may have to water lightly 3 or 4 times a day....do not let the seed dry out. Linda C

I think St Augustine does better than bermuda when overseeded with rye. The problem is the tall rye shades out the lower plants. St Aug grows higher to begin with and should compete better for sunlight. Still, I wouldn't do it. If you are mowing at the mower's highest setting and only watering once a month in the winter, you should not see any dandelions. When you start watering again, be sure to apply a full inch and allow the ground to dry out for a couple of weeks before watering again. As the temps increase you can increase the frequency to 2 weeks and then weekly. Henbit and horseherb are buggers. Fortunately they pull out pretty easily. If you want to spray them one time with a chemical product, let me know. It will wipe them out for the rest of the season.

Actually, NEVER is the time to do it. But since you want to continue watering, mowing, and fertilizing all year long, then do it as soon as the summer heat starts to break. Watch for evening temps to cool down. That's when. Why never? Because the rye grass, thin as it is, is dense enough and tall enough in the spring to shade out the bermuda. Rye delays the return of bermuda by a matter of weeks and can completely wipe it out in spots if the conditions are right. Then you get into a situation where you want to overseed the bermuda with bermuda. If you have a Tif 419 hybrid lawn, the overseeding will turn a beautiful lawn into a patch of weedy looking common bermuda. You might have seen bermuda sports fields over seeded with rye for winter activities. They can do that and get away with it because they have special chemicals, which you cannot buy, to kill the rye in the spring. Can you tell I'm trying to discourage you from doing this?

First off, I don't know which forum to go to. Since this forum is about grasses, I came here. I sowed annual rye grass seeds last summer, and they did not come up at all. I have found a lot of rye grass like grasses in my yard. Are they rye grasses, the ones I sowed last summer? If they are, they had taken a long time to germinate, hadn't they? Thanks
