So....

I got my first CP in May.

It was beginning to get hot out and i was trying to save AC money by keeping my balcony window open. Flies also used the window. I had alwasy wanted t Venus flytrap since I was a little kid (didn't we all?) so I ordered one online.

The plant I got was pretty small...WAY to small to catch a housefly. I began to do research online, and found that I could also probably raise Drosera...sarracenias....nepenthes....

Now...4 months later...I own about 30 CPs!

Just today....I bout about 50 more (15 of them baby VFTs for about $1 each)

I guess that NYC flies are super yummy, because all of my plants have been doing great (with the exception of a ping which seem to be hard for anyone to keep healthy).

On top of all this...I am now also a wingless fruitfly farmer! Believe it or not..I have found these suckers harder to breed than the VFTS, in a closed enviorment (don't want them to breed with the flying ones) which is several containers out on my balcony, with my CPs.

So...from 1 year ago...when i wouldn't have been interested in buying vegatables that were too fresh...I've gone to CP fanatic! (and fruit fly fanatic as well...did I mention i now have a turtle? he likes the FFs as too!)

Anyway...I guess that my point is that I have found growing CPs to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

And if I have to have an addiction....CPs are def better than other addictions i could have taken up here, in NYC!

PS....Since I can't build an additional room onto my apt...what am i gonna do when I finally run out of room?!?! :D

You can send them to me - I have lots of room and a greenhouse!

My son is in your position, too - he lives in Virginia, in an apartment - he has over 75 potted plants on his balcony! LOL His wife is about to knock him in the head!!!!

OK but also: Admit that you feel good about helping your soil structure. Admit that you're helping the good ol'Earth rather than bastardizing it. Admit that the people that see you and catch on to the good you are doing WILL BE a postive thing. Admit that this hobby will keep you living longer than eating crap and watching Judge Judy. Admit that the lack of desire to change IS because you KNOW this is good for the family to see character in your attitude and respect for doing positive social endeavors. Admit there is a bunch of other folks here hoping there is a million more like you. Admit that a sandwitch baggie is cheap enough to keep the business clothes dry and Still capture that Tea bag.

Well I do have the completed nest in the nest cam box and they have been here quite a bit today. This pair is quite different than any pair I have had. I've never seen this female before (at least not in adult form)They have been checking other boxes out even after the first egg was laid in the original nest. The male does not feed the female but brings her to the feeder. They never spent much time on or in the box while the 3 eggs were being laid. I guess that's why I wasn't to worried. Today the female WENT INTO THE HOSP box!!! I nearly crapped myself, later the male was on it. I took one of the weeds the HOSP had in there and wove it over the hole hoping to keep the Blues out but the HOSPs can get in if they really want to. (the HOSPs have not bonded with any box yet). So my Blues are still here but what to do next I have no clue, I still have Dees checking boxes but 3 of 4 have some sort of nest in them, I can put up more boxes (the TREES are here but not box shopping yet) aaccckkk I'm getting to old for this!

My stepkids have a very on again-off again relationship with their biomom. She is unreliable, unstable, they cannot and do not trust her, and they very seldom want to go with her or spend more than a very short amount of time with her. But even though she walked out on them without so much a backwards glance, only comes around when she wants money from my DH or to make thier dad and I's life a living hell they still love her and I think they feel like calling me mom is somehow going to hurt her, so they don;t do it, even though she has hurt them over and over and hasn't given it a second thought. You sound like a great guy and your son sounds lucky to have you in his life, but perhaps he feels like he will somehow betray his bio-dad, eventhough he doesn't even know him. I guess I don't have nay advice, just an opinion and a perspective from another step-parent's point of view - Good Luck Candy

LOL!

We've had pretty good luck with our CPs too but have kept it to a minimum due to lack of space. One VFT we've had for over four years and finally split it at the beginning of the summer--all four new plants are doing fine and are putting out small red-mouthed, hungry traps.

The pitcher plants have been around a while too and the large pitchers are spilling over the top of the terrarium they're in and now line the sides of the glass--they look beautiful!

I bought a new book called 'The Savage Garden' and I am now ready to go on to the advanced level of CP gardening.

LOVE CPs--they are like nothing else.
