Visiting the wests National Parks? Heres a butterfly mecca.

Forum is slow, so thought IÂd add an enticement for any of you who happen to be planning a trip to the westÂs National Parks next summer. You know, the whirlwind drive by visit to the ones that are all closely lumped together in the south west (Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Zion, Mesa Verde and Grand Canyon) along with dozens of other must see one-of-a-kind recreation sites (reserves, etc). Places where all butterflies are strictly protected and even chasing one for a photo is looked down on.

A common jump off place for visiting all these places is St. George, Utah, a beautiful small town in extreme SW Utah on I-15 140 miles north of Las Vegas and 300 miles south of Salt Lake City.

The St. George area hosts all of the many diversified habitats normally encountered in the west, from the hot and dry lows of a true desert (2100Â) to the moist and cool arctic/alpine environs of high mountains (over 10,000Â) within 25 miles of each other. So how does that relate to butterflies? It offers the complete range of wild natural food plants, temperatures and humidity for almost every species recorded in Utah, along with many species found in that area in Utah only. Add easy access even in a passenger car to beautiful butterfly areas I call "magnets" and the observation, photography or collecting of livestock is as easy as picking up produce at you local food store.

Yes you have to be there at the right time(s) for each species and know something about the life history of each species, but one of the great things about the area is at least several species and/or their livestock are present year round, with the very best times being the normal tourists seasons from early spring to late fall. Species life history dictates approximate times, although after having researched there for decades and lived there for many years my fields notes can put most species to the exact week.

Anyway, if you are going to do the NPÂs, this is an area well worth a day or overnight stay to get some butterfly time in too.
