Hi,

I am wondering how many on this list grow daturas? I have grown the common white one for years and then planted Jimson Weed this summer and it went wild so I pulled it all out. I was surprised that it barely had 4 leaves on it and bloomed. Can you direct me to a link, website or whatever so I can see pics of datura growing other than my white? I would like to see the whole plant if possible. I looked at some past posts and the pictures were deleted. Are the other varieties as hardy as the white and do they grow about the same size? I would love to grow more varieties of datura as it does so well here. Mine winters over in zone 7a and wonder if the others are as hearty? When I bought seed from Jung Seed this summer they told me to put it in the freezer for a few days, then soak in water and then plant it. Is this normal? Thanks and would love to hear from datura lovers!

I'm guilty! Love them as much as brugs! :) Here's a long thread which Jack started back in 2005! I long to try some of his seeds! :) Many, many different colors! Some to die for! lol!

Hi there, I love daturas, they're one of my very favorite flowers. I've grown them here in the Phoenix area for several years and really, really enjoy them. I've carried plants and seeds to and from various gardens. Since this past winter was so mild, my daturas didn't die to the ground in dormancy like they do some years, so they have a head start this year and are already making their first flower buds of the season. I'm excited. I love the scent, and the crazy large size, and the fact that they open in the evening when I can really enjoy them. They're easy to grow and keep happy. My best plants get half a day sun (though they will tolerate full sun, but will be a bit stunted). Planted against an east-facing wall is a terrific spot so they get gentle morning sun, mid day sun, and then they are shielded from the hottest afternoon sun. I toss a little water on them once or twice a week in summer and that's it. They will self-sow and you'll have plenty of babies to share or relocate. During chilly winters (for here) they will die to the ground, but they pop right up when the temps warm up. The only "trouble" I've ever had with them is that their seeds usually need stratification, where they get alternating cool, warm, wet, dry conditions to sprout. So if I get seeds and plant them in a nice pot indoors they often don't sprout, but if I take those same pots and put them outside in autumn the seeds sprout in spring after they "know" they've had a winter and it's over. I hope that makes sense. If I want extras, I plant the seed outside in the ground or in pots in autum and have seedlings in spring (like now). Some commercial seed is pre-treated to sprout, so that's not an issue, and sometimes seed is old enough that it's ready to sprout without treatment, so give them a try indoors if you'd like. Just remember if they don't sprout they may do so later. I've have some where I planted five seeds and one sprouts right away, and I plant the whole pot of soil into the ground, and then not until the following spring do the other four seeds sprout, lol. Anyway, once you get your first plant up and growing you're set. I remove fading blossoms for most of the summer so that the plant keeps blooming, then in late summer I let a few flowers stay on the plant to become seed pods and I just scatter the seeds in the ground or in pots when the seed pods break open. I do love daturas! Just remember they're pretty toxic (which is different from poisonous) to most mammals. Tomato hornworms love to eat their foliage too, but I don't mind when I have large plants since the hornworms become the beautiful hovering hawkmoths that will come back to pollinate the blooms during summer nights. If you don't like them, or don't like the damage, you can sprinkle BT bacteria on the foliage and it will kill the caterpillars, but again I just let them go as long as the bulk of the plant is okay. I've had the best luck with Datura meteloides, but have several other species growing too. Good luck! I haven't tried moonflowers here, so maybe someone else can share. I have a plant that's already 2 years old, stays outside in a huge pot with geraniums, morning glories, and petunias. It comes back every year because I let the seeds fall inside the pot and if they land anywhere I just throw them in. The answers above me are sage advice, I'd do just that, this plant is super easy and Loving, doesn't require nothing but water. I live in Dallas, TX so I use Miracle-Gro just a few times a year. Early Spring,Fall, just before Winter if it gets very cold, during the Summer I'll use it in June then in August, but I also use Miracle-Gro potting soil and water every day if my plants and flowers need it. I like the liquid version of Miracle-Gro better, just don't pour it on top of the plants only on the dirt, I also sprinkle insecticide over them for ants and insects. Sometimes the leaves will curl up when it's too hot. Hope this helps, good luck~ Garden Lover

Hi Tom - thank you for taking the time to respond. .Datura Innoxia will not survive the often brutal winters here...I was surprised to see it surviving as an out door perennial through only slightly milder Cape Cape winters. I never wrote that I intended to keep it as a houseplant - I felt fortunate to induce the seeds I had to germinate in my garden soil - when they hardly developed and hadn't flowered by late October, I decided to take a friends suggestion to try potting and overwintering them. I intend to KEEP the plant in the large container that it's in permanently, as I'll need to bring it in again next winter. My question was primarily in regard to any strategies that could be suggested to improve the sturdiness of the primary stalk as the plant itself is becoming more top heavy and "tippy" as it grows (see pic). Perhaps I'm just fussing too much. As you can see, it appears to be thriving with very minimal attention and feeding other than daily gentle misting. I've been keeping the house at at an average temperature of 68 degrees - sometimes warmer, and not usually below 60. As time progresses, I will consider your thoughts about a cooler environment...remember that this plant was seeded and grown outdoors, not started inside and then transplanted. I'm also growing this lovely plant as a tribute and connection to my mom, who as I mentioned, painted it growing wild on The Cape in the 1980s. Secondarily, I'd like to have it produce flowers and then seeds that I can propagate: starting them inside this time and then transplanting them, so that they might develop enough in my short season to flower outdoors and produce more seed. So it's all a labor of love for me. As far as the general warning about the plants "toxicity", I've found that general warnings or hearsay are what are usually communicated, and that, like everything are imprecise in understanding the physiology and dangers of specific plants. I'm aware of the potential dangers of being careless around these plants or any others with which one might be unfamiliar. I've grown giant Castor Beans Plants as annuals for years and find that there are some rumors following them around, too. KarmaHappyToes...your site is amazing and very informative! You are really into Brugs and Dats! Thank you for sharing what you have learned. I especially like that you showed the stages of care for the Brugs and I am glad your Brugs have their own house now. How cool is that! Thanks again!

Mike....How dare you send me that link???!!! I am stunned at the success Jack has had with his Daturas. They are to die for!!! Oops...think you said that already. Oh my, my, my!! I will go back and enjoy those pics over again and then imagine them growing in my yard. I can dream..can't I?

Yes most of us love datura too. I didn't have much luck this year starting seeds but the two I had from last year came back and I hope I do better this year with the seed starting. One of the houses I saw in Tulsa had a border going all the way along the ouside of the fence to the sidewalk with Purple cone flower, huge white datura, canna's and elephant ears all all planted together like a living fence. It was stunning! I wish I could have gotten a pic of it. It was down by the river and we had parked in the neighborhood and walked down that street to get to where they were doing the fireworks and they were dragging me down the road, lol. I was trying to look in all the backyards we passed and that was the very last yard and it dead ended into the entry to the river walk park. I was throwing a fit, lol. There is a beautiful park right by there I wanted to go see as well that we didn't make it to. It looked like it had great gardens. Johns sister just moved from there a couple of weeks ago. Too bad because I was really looking forward to going back there.

oh yes I love DAts too. After all. The Brugs are getting most of my attention so I need something else that is easy going rofl.

Mike I would like to know to if Jack sells or trades his Dat seeds? But then you had some beautiful once also! And I KNOW you will have them again next season.

So Joyce what are we getting into next season? lol

Hi Joyce, to address the hardiness question, D. wrightii & D. inoxia both have perennial rootstocks. With a little protection, they'll come back in our zones 7-8. I think once you start getting down into the 6s & lower you may have to lift the roots as you would a dahlia. How much do you shelter yours?
As far as I know none of the rest are supposed to be hardy at all, though I am testing a possible subspecies of D. metel that is reported to be perennial in Georgia. Also, as far as metel goes, I have friends who prop. metel from cuttings with great success. I am experimenting with taking cuttings from inoxia & wrightii this year, just for my own curiousity, & because I had a variegated inoxia pop up this year.

It sounds as if you have seen more of Tulsa's flowers and gardens than I have! I might have to drive down to the area you were talking about. I have been away from gardening and growing plants for the last 5 years. My dog had a rare cancer & I cared for her 24/7 for 2 years. Then after she died my husband fell 15 feet off a scaffold and shattered his legs. Took care of him for 3 years. SOOOO...now I am ready to care for plants!!!!
If you get up this way again let me know!

Lucy...What am I getting into next season??? Well I got a jump on it by buying a plumeria a few days ago. I will have to see how that goes. I LOVE protea and had ordered seeds from South Africa and tried without success to grow them about 6 years ago. Might look into that again.

John...My white Daturas all over yard, some even around the mailbox hanging into the street. No protection whatsoever. I was shocked they overwintered and they come back from the roots. I have grown them for the last 10 years or so. I usually cut them back as I don't like the seeds to seed all over the yard. The only thing I can think of is I have sandy soil and that helps?? Although everything I read says they like rich soil. Who knows! Thanks for your tips!

Joyce I know what else I am getting into now. lol. It is Kristy's fault of course. rofl. Being able to go and actually SEE her garden and how beautiful her plants are and WHAT she has, just opened my eyes a bit more lol.
So since I have not been able to get brug seeds to sprout for me and I am tired of wasting money on buying new supplies lol. I ordered myself a whole bunch of Plummeria seeds yesterday lol
The different Dat seed pods are still ripening Joyce. But Whatever I will get, I share with you of course.
