what i did was also pulling very healthy leaves of one of my VFTs. I pulled very healthy leaves from the mother plant. all the way down from the basal area. as petiolaris mentioned, you must pull the leaves gently, allowing the white base of the leave intact and not damaged. Ok, what i did was different. after i pulled a few healthy leaves(about 4 leaves) I had a small 3" inch pot filled with moist peat moss. After you select your leaf pullings, lay the leaves facing down, this is a bit tricky to explain, place the cuttings the same way as if it were growing in the mother plant. make sure the white base of the leaf face downwards, this way, when plantets emerge they will be settling on their own into the soil. after laying the leaf cuttings on the moist peat moss, pick a small pinch of peat moss and shrivel it on top of the leaf's white base, cover it slightly, afterwards.. spray some purified water upon the base of the leaf pullings, this water will adjust the leaves into the moist peat moss. afterwards, wahtever you do to keep high humidity depends up to you. I used a clear, recyclable plastic cup as a Dome to keep the leave pullings high in humidity. i cover the small 3" inch pot with the clear dome, then i grow these leave pullings under artificial lighting for atleast 13 hours a day. within a week or two, you should see small plantets forming from the white base of the leaves. not all leaves will sprout plantets, but there's a 90% chance for the cuttings to form plantets. i am currently growing only one baby flytrap that i grew from a leaf cutting, it has been re-planted individually into its own small container. i will take pics of it whenever i get digital camera!! good luck with your flytrap propagation. PS: seeds is very a slow procedure but yet indeed rewarding if patience is present! so far, my vft seedlings from seed turned 1 year old last july. :)

Speaking as a Biology teacher, your teacher is unfortunately incorrect. As has been pointed out, sealed terrs are typically very problematic in large part because of the issue of stagnant air. Few plants (or animals for that matter) do well under such conditions and fungi -- including pathogenic ones -- thrive. Furthermore, vfts are EXTREMELY poor terr candidates for a number of reasons: 1) They are very high light plants ... even up to full sun. In a terr it is difficult to provide that kind of light intensity without raising the temperature to lethal levels. 2) Vft's like to send their roots quite deep. This would require a fairly large terr. 3) Most significantly, vfts REQUIRE a chilly/cold winter's dormancy to maintain health/vigor. Without it, they weaken and die -- though they may survive for two or three (maybe four if you are very lucky) years before finally kicking the bucket. Unless you plan on giving the entire tank a cold dormancy or digging the vfts up to do so, they are better off not setting a root tip in a terr. Now having said this, some cps can be done in a "sealed" terr BUT it will require the inclusion of fans for air circulation and a rather large tank too. I say "sealed" in quotes because while the terrs in question are left closed for periods of time they are by no means left closed permanently. People I know growing Nepenthes, for example, this way, do open up the tank every day or two as they check on the plants and allow an exchange of fresh air. It is far easier to go for a partly sealed tank setup (still using fans) as one can keep humidity levels up while allowing for some air exchange. With such a setup, there are a number of cps -- pinguicula, utricularia, and drosera -- that could be used. With regards to the ant idea ... The concern regarding ants harming the plants is not terribly likely unless you were to obtain species that -- like the leaf cutter ants -- actually use vegetation as a food source. However, the issue of wet, stagnant conditions would prove detrimental to most ant species. Also most ant species are carnivorous or scavengers. So you would have to have present a renewable prey/food source for them. And unless you did have a very well sealed setup, you would in all likelihood have ants touring your room and/or home. (And I suspect your parents might object to that. )

I stopped at my local Ace Hardware today and of course I took a look at their plants. There was a table with several CPs but none had tags. There are 11 species of these plants and some look very similar even to me…and I've been growing CPs for 20 years. A sales lady heard me comment on the lack of tags to my husband and she volunteered that they were Cobra plants and Venus fly traps. NOPE! NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!! They all were north American pitcher plants (Sarracenia). She insisted even after I explained the difference and my experience with these plants. And to make it worse they were potted in regular potting soil…CPs are bog plants! They grow in water. I felt so sorry for them. The moral of this post is unless you are buying "regular" plants at Ace (and these all have tags) stay away from CPs and orchids for that matter (same problem with these…no tags and wrong info).
